Managing Had a request from a Dietitian but expectation the service was unable to

Managing Had a request from a Dietitian but expectation the service was unable to offer to of staff and support this due to large numbers of student practice placements and return to resulting lack of staff capacity practice person. No challenges Challenge is lack of clear process and variation in practice in Highland with - currently nursing and midwifery are developing a RTP policy (in response to potential funding to support RTP nurses) paperwork - some of the information will be helpful however unclear as to what will apply to AHPs and if funded placements to be available for all RTP. However a positive was smooth process for honorary contract (unpaid) recently and Highland funded the RTP OT PVG application. our Board do not support or provide honorary contracts, so using the paperwork in the draft RTP doc was not suitable Our AHP leads have agreed to create a band 3 generic JDF which we could use to employ people for the period of their RTP placement - this is in process and possibly not moved forward from being an idea. Our HR department suggested this and is supportive of no, we have an agreed and clear process and now use the guidance the SLWG created last year. No problems following the process which was established based in Fife based on the NHS Tayside one. Only question that tends to come up is what the RTP should wear Difficult to navigate the procedures which are often led by nursing colleagues who of course have a very different process. Seeking clarity from the organisation is a challenge, local agreement around uniforms and PVG etc can also be a challenge. Ensuring that the learner is clear about there learning needs can also be an issue, tend to use EP self ass to provide some clarity when required Challenges around individuals who have trained out with the UK which is different although follows similar HCPC process. Lack of clarity on their previous knowledge and skills and the large amount of hours required not appealing to staff groups. HR process always takes some time! Challenges IN supporting RTP? In FV we did not have a policy and this was written and approved 2018. FV HR does not have honorary contracts. HR supportive in writing and commenting on the design of the policy in order to be approved locally. Policy based on NHS Tayside.

What do you hear from clinicians regarding perceived concerns & risks from supporting RTP

What do you hear from clinicians regarding perceived concerns & risks from supporting RTP supervised placements? time and concern that they are assessing but we discuss this in the initial meeting what to expect they can do while on placement? generally supportive That they are overwhelmed with undergraduate students so don't have time to supervise a RTP individual Clinicians needing support from PEL to understand navigate the placement learning objectives, perceptions of responsibility for signing off people "competency to practice" locally there were concerns as the person returning possibly worked here and with people years before, and the negative stories from the past and concerns remain under the surface and colour people's expectations "

Concerns cont… Reassurance that the supervising clinician is not making judgement on the returnee

Concerns cont… Reassurance that the supervising clinician is not making judgement on the returnee fitness to practice as this is the responsibility of the returnee to evidence this in their paperwork. Again fear and rightly so in my mind about some of our european counterparts standard of training. How essentially we are retraining them or introducing brand new areas and knowledge which essentially is not RTP. Mostly clinicians looking for guidance and happy to support placements if know what is needed - I have shared Grampian and Forth Valley guidance. Tend to meet with the clinicians to discuss it before the RTP starts. Think the main concern is that they are not assessing the RTP competence to practice - just signing off the hours, but any issues they contact HCPC. That we provide the right level of support, concerns regarding over powering versus nurturing I hear voiced concerns regarding signing off paperwork for competence. Lack of understanding as to what would be involved. How much support is required, time to provide support, who is accountable
