Overview • • • Statement of Problem Project Description Intended Use Proof of Design Recommendation
Statement of Problem • Poor network performance and stability • Security issues • Configuration and topology analysis is needed • Availability of network classroom instruction
Project Description • Simulated model of OCAS’s live computer network • Includes routers, switches, PC’s, servers and printers • Used to study, analyze and optimize network performance • Microsoft Access Database
Intended Use/User Profile • Network Administrators § UCIT to take a closer look at faulty network design § Implement changes in network architecture and configuration § Offers visual and statistical proof of the need for modifications • Professors & Students § Demonstrations in classroom § Used for labs on network analysis and optimization § Offers “real-world” scenario
Deliverables • Current network model with baseline statistics • Optimized network model with scenario results • Microsoft Visio diagram of network configuration • Microsoft Access database network configuration information • Collection of all network models and analysis data available for UCIT administrators, and professor & student use
Proof of Design
Recommendation • Router replacement wasn’t necessary as we are only connected to one other router § $45, 000 Spent on Cisco 6500 • VLANs only versus with Subnets § More Flexibility § Less processing on router § Much Cheaper!!!
Recommendation (cont. ) • Purchase Layer 3 Switches to handle Virtual LANs for network segmentation § Nortel ERS 5500 costs $4995 and integrates with current Cisco equipment • Utilize Gigabyte Switches Elsewhere • Spend $$$ on Wireless AP’s, Firewalls, other Security Infrastructure
