WHY I CHOSE THIS PROJECT Create a project that utilizes and increases my current knowledge in network architecture. Create a project that displays technical advances in disaster recovery architecture.

PROBLEM OVERVIEW Widget Systems, Inc. has recently gained an increased focus on network security and high availability. The network contained legacy network infrastructure that was end of sale and lacking critical security updates. The network also contained issues with high availability which was causing extended downtime for manufacturing production.

PROJECT CONTENT The goal for the project was to design and implement a secure network with minimal single points of failure. The project contained 5 phases: Discovery, Primary DC WAN, Primary DC LAN, Secondary DC WAN, Secondary DC LAN and DCI Implementation phases. The Discovery Phase consisted of network discovery, identification and topology mapping. The WAN Implementation phases consisted of the implementation of new firewalls and routers. The LAN Implementation phases consisted of the implementation of new datacenter switches. The DCI Phase consisted of the configuration of Overlay Transport Virtualization.

STRATEGIES Utilize Solarwinds product suite for network discovery. Perform network security audit to identify current vulnerabilities. Enhance high availability in network infrastructure to increase network reliability. Utilize equipment similar to what the IT staff has historically supported to lesson learning curve.

Separation of duties for employees to ensure proper employees are performing tasks matching their skillset. Utilize outside consultants for hardware/software verification and security testing.

LESSONS LEARNED – SYSTEMS SECURITY Importance of host and network based security. Importance of inbound and outbound filtering at firewall level. Importance of encryption when sending traffic to the WAN or across the LAN. Importance of logging traffic, login/logout events and system changes.

PROFESSIONAL WORK APPLICATION Improved knowledge of ISO framework. Utilization of improved knowledge of project management. CEH & CHFI certifications to assist in furthering my career.
