REFLEXES A reflex is like a shortcut for a nerve impulse. The message goes from the sensory receptor to the spinal cord, and back to the motor muscle. It skips the brain, so that the response is involuntary and very fast.

STROKE Blood supply to the brain is disrupted. Nervous tissue dies due to lack of oxygen. This can be fatal in some cases.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE Degeneration of the brain that tends to occur with old age. It’s associated with memory loss and general confusion (a type of dementia). Its causes are unknown.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE The amount of dopamine produced and released into synapses is diminished. This makes it difficult for one nerve to communicate with the next. It’s associated with tremors. Its cause is unknown.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) Autoimmune condition where the protective myelin sheath is attacked, causing scarring. This disrupts the neurons’ ability to communicate with one another. There is no known cause or cure.

AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS) Progressive deterioration of motor neurons. Eventually, the brain loses control over the movement of muscles. It’s usually fatal, and there is no known cause or cure. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
