What is the anterior insular cortex? AIC is the portion of the brain that processes empathy and is necessary for emotional awareness. To reach the anterior insular cortex: • slice through the parietal and occipital bone • remove back of cranium • scoop out anterior insular cortex with a “melon baller” type of tool

This artificial model shows the part of the brain where the AIC was scooped out.

Psychopaths and the Anterior Insular Cortex

Empathy The anterior insular cortex is where the feeling of empathy originates and is the part of the brain that processes empathy, but the rule of psychopaths is that they have no empathy. Empathy is defined as the ability to perceive and share another person's emotional state.

Psychopaths: • are disassociated from their feelings • have no conscience • have no emotions like trust, morality, and love • love for a psychopath isn’t the same as in • usually don’t seek an emotional connection • selfless love is impossible
