NERF Gun Project Sam Luzader
What is NERF? ● Nerf~A toy brand owned by Hasbro, the toys range from foam based weaponry to foam balls. ● The brand was made in 1970 when the parker brothers released “the worlds first indoor ball” ● the name Nerf comes from the slang term for padding in off-road racing
Blasters Nerf blasters launch ammunition one of three ways: ● Springs-a compression spring is compressed and held in place with a catch. when the trigger is pulled the catch releases the spring and the air is forced out, pushing the dart.
● Air- air is pumped into an air tank and released quickly propelling the dart out of the barrel ● Motor- two motorized wheels in the blaster spin and a dart is pushed in between them launching the dart similar to a pitching machine
Ammunition ● Nerf blasters have a wide variety of ammunition
Prototypes ● The first prototype used springs and did not work at all as the dart would almost never leave the barrel because of a weak spring. it was scrapped for parts. ● The second prototype also used springs, however these were much stronger. this prototype also failed completely with a similar problem as the first. ● I then added rubber o-rings to the end of the plunger with still no success
Final product ● having no success with a spring gun I went for the much easier and simplistic design of an air gun
Parts ● the barrel is ½” PVC connected to a ½” pvc ball valve ● the ball valve is connected to a bunch of pipes in order to reach 3” ● the main part of the air tank is 3” pvc with 3” pvc end caps ● one of the 3” pvc end caps has the valve from a bike tire in it allowing a bike pump to connect to it ● ● barrel ball valve connecting pipes air tank
Extra notes ● the final gun cost about $30 for the pvc and glue but it could be done cheaper ● the gun is not completed yet as it can still use improvements such as a much qiucker reloading system. ● if you want to build your own but have no idea where to start this forum is very helpful.
