ESSA O ESSA – Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) O Updates the No Child Left Behind law O Provides states and school districts more freedom to make educational decisions O Updates indicators used to determine school accountability O Refines how schools are identified for more targeted support
ESSA Plan Requirements
Performance Measures O PARCC English Language Arts/Mathematics Proficiency O Graduation Rate (HS) O Student Growth Percentiles (ES/MS) O Chronic Absenteeism (10% absence or more) O English Language Proficiency (if applicable)
How Are Schools Measured? O By 2030, schools must meet all target goals O 80% of students proficient in ELA and Math O 95% Graduation Rate (4 year cohort)/ O 96% Graduation Rate (5 year cohort) O 85% of English Language Learners increasing by one level on WIDA ACCESS O Interim Targets O Schools must close 25% of gap by 2021 O Schools must close 60% of gap by 2026 O Schools will be rated by combining their results from all accountability targets into one overall score O Information regarding progress towards targets will be reported on School Performance Reports by Do. E each year
What If We Do Not Meet the Targets? O Schools will be identified based on Comprehensive Need or Targeted Support O Comprehensive Support and Improvement O Bottom 5% of all Title I Schools O Targeted Support for 3 or more consecutive years O Targeted Support and Improvement O Subgroups perform at or below the bottom 5% of Title I schools O Consistently Underperforming subgroups for 2 or more years O Schools that did not meet their Progress Targets must develop a plan detailing how they will address the needs of student populations that did not meet their progress targets and other measures of student performance.
How Did We Do? 2016 -2017 Information Reported on School Performance Report
Neptune Middle School O Academic Achievement O ELA – Met 5 out of 8 targets (did not meet for Two or More Races, Economically Disadvantaged, or Students with Disabilities) O Math – Met 2 out of 8 targets (met targets for White and Students with Disabilities) O College and Career Readiness (Absenteeism) O 2016 -17 Rate of 16. 6% was 0. 2% increase from 2015 -16 and above target of 8. 7% O Target was met for English Learner subgroup (8. 0%) O Student Growth O Met growth targets for White and Two or More Races subgroups in both Math and ELA O Did not meet in remaining 6 subgroups for either subject
Title I Schools O Need to complete an Annual School Plan O Parent Involvement Requirement O Schools will get an allocation (1% of total grant split between 5 schools) O Schools must distribute their Parent Involvement Plan and District Parent Involvement Policy. O Must complete a School-Parent Compact O “Right to Know” letter to parents; parents have the right to ask schools about a teacher’s qualifications O Distribute Language Instruction Letter within 30 days after school starts for children enrolled in a bilingual program O All documents will be posted on the district website
What We Plan to Accomplish This Year
Middle School… O Title I funds are providing teachers, students and families with… O Materials to support instruction in Math and ELA including APEX Learning software, mathematics manipulatives and books to grow classroom libraries O Training and support for teachers to strengthen instructional strategies O Five District Parent Involvement Events on topics related to academic needs as well as building based activities
