Negative Tú Commands 8 To form negative tú command: Ø yo form present-tense Ø drop the o Øadd the opposite “tú” endings:

For –ar verbs add “es” HABLAR hablo No hables For –er/-ir verbs add “as” COMER como No comas

Don’t forget the different “yo forms” or the stem-changers: (they follow the same pattern) salgo pongo hago escojo ofreczco enciendo juego pido

No salgas OFRECER No ofrezcas ESCOGER No escojas HACER No hagas SALIR

-car, -gar, and –zar (verbs) Have spelling changes in negative tú commands so they can maintain the original sound.

-car (c qu) -gar (g gu) -zar (z c) TOCAR toco LLEGAR llego no toques no llegues CRUZAR cruzo no cruces

ir, ser, dar, and estar Surprise! They are irregular in the negative tú command.

8 Dar 8 Estar 8 Ir 8 Ser 8 No des 8 No estés 8 No vayas 8 No seas

8 With negative commands, pronouns always go before the verb. No lo comas

8¿Tomo dos aspirinas ahora? 8 No, no las tomes ahora. 8 Sí tomálas

8¿Te doy mi consejo? 8 No, no me des tu consejo. 8 Sí dame tu consejo.

You try… 8 Do not wash the car. No laves el carro. 8 Do not wash it. No lo laves. 8 Wash it now. Lávalo ahora.

8 Do not skip a meal. No saltes una comida. 8 Don’t skip it. No la saltes. 8 Skip it. Sáltala.

8 Don’t complain. No te quejes. 8 Complain tomorrow. Quéjate mañana.
