NE …. PAS l To make a sentence negative we have learned to use ne…pas (not) ¡ Examples Je n’ai pas un frère. l Tu ne danses pas. l l In the passé composé, ne…. pas goes around the helping verb not the past participle. ¡ Je n’ai pas choisi la musique. ¡ Il n’est pas allé au parc.

Other Negative Expressions l There are more ways to make a negative expression than just ne … pas (not). l In English other negative expressions are ¡ No one ¡ Never ¡ No longer ¡ Nothing …etc.

Other Negative expressions l Those same expressions can translate into French. ¡ ¡ ¡ l Ne … pas encore = not yet Ne … jamais = never , not ever Ne … plus = no more, no longer Ne … rien = nothing, not anything Ne … personne = no one , nobody Just like using ne … pas, the ne goes before the verb (or helping verb in passé composé) and the pas / jamais/ plus etc goes after.

EXAMPLES l Je n’ai pas encore acheté le cadeau. ¡ l Je n’achète jamais de cadeau. ¡ l I not doing anything / I’m doing nothing Je ne vois personne. ¡ l I no longer buy gifts. Je ne fais rien. ¡ l I never buy gifts. Je n’achète plus de cadeau. ¡ l I haven’t yet bought the gift. I don’t see anyone / I see no one. Write your own example using ne … jamais

Negative Expressions l You can use many negative expressions without a complete sentence. l When doing this use only the second part of the expression with out the word ne. ¡ Example: l Qu’est-ce que ta tante fait pour t’aider? – Rien. • What’s your aunt doing to help you? - Nothing l Tu vois quelqu’un? – Non personne. • Do you see some one? – No, no one.
