PUMPING REQUIREMENTS & DESIGN NCSX • Requirement of a minimum pumping speed of 1300

PUMPING REQUIREMENTS & DESIGN NCSX • Requirement of a minimum pumping speed of 1300 l/s • Design consists of one pumping duct using the NB transition piece and a vertical 24” duct • Two of the 1500 l/s TMPs from PBX-M with the existing bellows and ceramic breaks for mechanical and electrical isolation • Calculated effective pumping speed of proposed design is approx. 1500 l/sec • Two of the PBX-M 55 CFM mechanical pumps which are in place

NCSX PUMPING REQUIREMENTS & DESIGN • Controls will be with a PLC patterned after

NCSX PUMPING REQUIREMENTS & DESIGN • Controls will be with a PLC patterned after the NSTX design PBX-M Ceramic Break and Bellows Assembly 24” OD Tubing • The VPS system will be upgraded to a second duct and 2 additional TMPs after first plasma (2600 l/s) • One quadrupole mass spectrometer RGA near TMPs and one shielded ion gauge at vacuum vessel PBX-M 1500 l/s TMP PBX-M Gate Valve

NCSX VPS COST CONSIDERATIONS Testing PBX-M Legacy Equipment TMPs • 3 TMPs exercised on

NCSX VPS COST CONSIDERATIONS Testing PBX-M Legacy Equipment TMPs • 3 TMPs exercised on a test stand for 4 hours each • A 4 th TMP is in routine use on MRX • Pumps and converters operate satisfactorily and are available for use on NCSX • Minor refurbishment prior to operation on NCSX

NCSX VPS COST CONSIDERATIONS Testing PBX-M Legacy Equipment Mechanical Backing Pumps • 4 Sargent-Welch

NCSX VPS COST CONSIDERATIONS Testing PBX-M Legacy Equipment Mechanical Backing Pumps • 4 Sargent-Welch 55 CFM pumps were run for >48 hours and were satisfactory • New shaft seals and belts prior to operation on NCSX • Savings to project of greater than $150 k between TMPs, mechanical pumps and related equipment

NCSX FUELING Gas Injection System • One gas injection assembly consisting of a piezo-electric

NCSX FUELING Gas Injection System • One gas injection assembly consisting of a piezo-electric pulse valve for injection of D 2, H 2 and He at up to 50 T-l/s • One gas delivery line and pumpout line with manual valves for cost savings and simplicity of implementation for first plasma operations • Control of pulse valve with a PLC and central computing • System is patterned after the NSTX design • Space to accommodate a pellet injector and/or a fast gas fueling system as future upgrades

NCSX WALL CONDITIONING Bakeout / GDC • 150ºC bakeout is the primary means of

NCSX WALL CONDITIONING Bakeout / GDC • 150ºC bakeout is the primary means of wall conditioning for first plasma • A Glow Discharge Cleaning (GDC) system will be installed as a future upgrade • GDC design will capitalize on the NSTX design Boronization • A boronization system using trimethylboron (TMB) and patterned on the NSTX design will be implemented after first plasma.

NCSX Summary * The NCSX vacuum pumping system will make use of legacy equipment

NCSX Summary * The NCSX vacuum pumping system will make use of legacy equipment with a cost savings of greater than $150 k to the project * Calculations of the effective pumping speed of VPS (approx. 1500 l/s) exceeds the project requirement of 1300 l/s * After first plasma, the VPS will be upgraded to meet the ultimate pumping requirement of 2600 l/s by replicating the initial installation at a second NB transition duct * The fueling and vacuum pumping system will be patterned after NSTX designs for proven performance, reliability and cost
