NCAA SCOREKEEPING & LIBERO TRACKING PROCEDURES – 2016
Ø This presentation must be viewed with Microsoft Power. Point 2003 or newer. Ø This presentation is beneficial for scorers and libero trackers at any experience level: Ø New Scorers – The majority of the slides follow parts of a “sample set” designed to cover the basics of using the NCAA Volleyball scoresheet. It is recommended that you use a blank scoresheet to follow along point by point. Ø Experienced Scorers – The presentation covers new sections of the scoresheet and serves as a quick resource. The following “Contents” information will easily guide you to the slide that covers the particular area you’re interested in.

2016 SCOREKEEPING RULE CHANGES AND POINTS OF EMPHASIS
2016 New Rules Affecting Scorers § Challenge Review System (CRS) now in effect for all Divisions for 2016
2016 Point of Emphasis Computerized Scoring § Primarily two products on the market § E-Score § Volley. Write § Links to training for the above products § Located on the PAVO website § http: //pavo. org/Rules-and-Tools/Scorer-Tools
2016 Point of Emphasis § NCAA Requirements for Using Computerized Scoring 1. Obtain a roster or player list from each team (or a spectator program) 2. Must have a spotter, even though the products handle both scoring and libero tracking 3. Must have an instantaneous back-up of the electronic file as the match progresses in case of computer failure; for example, a jump drive back-up 4. Must have printed scoresheets and LTS sheets on hand in case the need arises to switch to manual scoring
Scorer – General Responsibilities ØArrival Time – Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to match time, ready to work. Avoid being overly friendly with fans, players or coaches. ØAttire – Wear a white polo shirt (preferably the same style white polo shirt worn by the referees, with “Volleyball Certified Official” embroidered on one sleeve), navy slacks, white socks and white athletic shoes. If you are a PAVOcertified scorer, wear the certification patch on the right chestarea of the uniform shirt, and the current year certification pin on the left collar lapel. ØTools – It is a good idea to bring extra pens (both blue or black and red).
Scorer – General Responsibilities Prior to the match and each set, the scorer: Ø Registers the data of the teams; Ø Reviews the lineup information submitted by each team for completeness and accuracy; and Ø Records the starting lineup of each team from the lineup sheet.
Scorer – General Responsibilities During the match, the scorer: ØRecords the points scored and ensures the accuracy of the visible scoreboard; ØMonitors each team’s serving order; ØRecords timeouts and player substitutions, and informs the second referee of the number used; ØCommunicates with the second referee regarding the final point of the set and when the eighth point in the deciding set is scored; ØRecords sanctions; and ØRecords all other events as instructed by the second referee (for example, exceptional substitutions or prolonged interruptions).
Scorer – General Responsibilities After the set, the scorer: ØRecords the final set results; ØChecks the scoresheet for accuracy; and ØSigns the scoresheet.
Scorer Tools ØScoresheets – At least four non-deciding set scoresheets and one deciding set scoresheet ØLibero Tracking Sheets – One Libero Tracking Sheet (LTS) should be sufficient for a five-set match, but having an extra is a good idea ØLineup Sheets – If the lineup sheets have space to enter all sets of the match, each team needs only one. Otherwise, a sufficient number of single-set lineup sheets for the entire match is required ØPens – Two blue (or black) pens and two red pens
Scenario – Scoring a Sample Set To give you practice in keeping score, we will now proceed through a sample set. Please have a blank scoresheet, a black (or blue) pen, and a red pen at hand. To begin, we will look at what should be entered onto the scoresheet prior to the start of the set. We will then present a series of playing events and demonstrate how to record them.
Scenario – Scoring a Sample Set The sample set covers a wide variety of events and potential situations. The objective is to learn the proper procedures for recording these events and situations. Many of the events described in this sample set rarely occur and will realistically not all happen in a typical set or match. The objective is to learn the proper procedure for recording the event and how to apply it to the specific play rather than to expect your future sets to present similar situations.

Unusual Situations Ø Other Comments – The Comments Section is used anytime a noteworthy situation occurs and is pertinent to the progress of the set. Document the score, team involved, referee action, and uniform numbers if applicable. Comments are noted for: o Exceptional Substitutions o Disqualifications o Significant Corrections Ø Scorer Errors – If the scorer makes a mistake, the mistake is crossed out with an “X” and the correct symbol is written. Ø Forfeits – If a set is forfeited before its start, the scorer prepares the scoresheet by filling in the heading, officials’ names, lineup of players and/or team present and a score of 25 -0, then writes FORFEIT across the scoresheet. If more than one set of the match is forfeited, the same scoresheet is used for all sets with additional set numbers circled in the SET section. The scorer then signs the scoresheet.

The Deciding Set Scoresheet INFORMATION A different scoresheet is used for the deciding set of the match because the teams switch sides of the court while the set is in progress (when the first team scores eight points). To accommodate that switch, the scoresheet is divided into three scoring sections.
INFORMATION There is also a deciding set section on the Libero Tracking Sheet. The “CP” column on the far right stands for “Current Player”. When the teams change sides, the last entry on each line on the far left is recorded in the “CP” column on the far right (thus, “current player”). If the libero is on the court at the time of the court switch, both the replaced player’s number and the “L” are recorded on the far right side.

CHALLENGE REVIEW SYSTEM (CRS)
Challenges • Each head coach is allowed three challenges per match – requested by a challenge card • Once a challenge is requested – regardless of the outcome – the number of challenges is reduced by one • If a coach attempts to challenge a non -reviewable decision, a delay sanction may be assessed (new Rule 6. 3. 2. 12)
Scorer’s Duties • If a substitution is authorized, record the substitution. • Assistant scorer makes the same substitution/libero replacement changes and records challenge information on LTS • The second referee should refrain from acknowledging substitutions, if it is apparent that a challenge is coming.
Scorer’s Duties • Record the challenge in the Comments area (Challenge # 1, challenging team, 14 -15 [challenging team’s score first]) • Assistant scorer records challenge information on LTS
CRS Outcomes • Possible Outcomes: o Decision stands o Decision is reversed o Decision is replayed
CRS Mechanics • The R 2 will verbalize the appropriate actions to be taken • The R 2 will turn back to the court and… • if the original decision stands, repeat the original fault signal • if the original decision is to be changed, signal the fault discovered through the review • The R 1 will signal the point/replay (or confirm the point if the original decisions stands); the R 2 mimics
Scorer’s Duties • If the decision is reversed: o The scorer will correct the score on the scoresheet. o The coach has the option to retain the substitution/replacement or not. • If the decision is replayed, the scorers will communicate to ensure that any substitution(s) and libero replacements recorded after the challenge are removed (like a mind change)
Example: Scoring Reversal The loss of rally was originally awarded to Team B (right side) giving them point 22 and showing the ‘R’ for rotate for Team A. The call was reversed, so a Mind Change is recorded for Team A (slashing the circled R, writing M, and recording point 21 in a square). Team B’s point 22 is canceled with an X. Corresponding changes are made in the Running Score column.
Computerized Scoring with CRS If the match uses computerized scoring, the scorer should: • • Have a spotter Use a paper back-up scoresheet, if needed Be able to quickly correct the score Be able to reverse libero replacements and/or substitutions
Additional Assistant Scorer Duties In some conferences, assistant scorers will also: • • Time the duration of the challenge process Complete the NCAA CRS Data Collection Form
