Social Media
Who We Are Talking About • Generally, publicity and electronic transmissions legislation apply to the following social media accounts: o Institutional athletics accounts; o Team accounts; o Athletics department staff members' personal accounts; and o Student-athletes' accounts – when directed by athletics department or staff.
Who We Are Talking About • Recruiting legislation applies to athletics-based recruiting and does not limit other offices on campus from the recruitment of prospective students generally. Therefore… o Admissions office (and other departments outside athletics) may publicize a PSA's visit to the institution's campus in the same manner done for prospective students generally. o Staff member outside athletics may publicly initiate or respond to social media correspondence provided the staff member… > Acts in the same manner for prospective students generally. > Does not act at the direction of or on behalf of athletics.
Public vs. Private • What is a private message? o Call, text, Face. Time and email. o Private direct message that only the PSA can see. • Who can see it? o Only the sender and the receiver should be able to see the communication.
Public vs. Private • There are no restrictions on the timing or number of telephone calls and private electronic correspondence with a PSA. o Except at the site of organized competition. • Remember! o o An enrolled SA may send public correspondence to a PSA if it is not for recruitment purposes. However… an enrolled SA must send private communication if it is for recruitment purposes or at the direction of the athletics department.

Social Media Exception • Permit institutional staff members to connect with (e. g. friend, follow, etc. ) PSAs on social media platforms. • Allow an institutional staff member to engage in actions that indicate approval of content on social media platforms that were generated by users of the platforms.
Social Media Exception • The exception deals with how interaction can take place with content created by the PSA (or other users), not content created by an institutional athletics account/coach account. • Think about it like this: • o A coach can retweet a PSA’s post because it is content created by the PSA. The coach cannot retweet the same post and include a comment, because the comment would constitute content created by the coach. Or like this: o A team account could like/favorite/retweet a post by a PSA announcing their commitment, but the team account cannot announce the commitment before a financial deposit is received – that content is still governed by Bylaw 13. 10. 7.
Or Like This: For social media… TAP don't TYPE If it's before May 1.

Club Teams
Club Teams It is permissible for an institution's coach or administrator to be involved in any capacity (e. g. , as a participant or administrator or in instructional or coaching activities) in an organized sports club or organization involving teams of prospective student-athletes. Bylaw 13. 11. 3. 4
Request/Self-Reports Online Our head volleyball coach has been asked to run a training session for a local club team. The team consists of 9 -12 graders. Our coach has no affiliation with the club. If it is permissible, can the coach be compensated?
Answer It is permissible for the coach to run a training session for a local club team and be compensated for doing so. If the institution or conference has reason to believe that the coach is only going to be involved on a one-time occasion for the purpose of observing or conducting workouts for PSAs (as prohibited in Bylaw 13. 11. 2. 1), it would not be permissible for the coach to participate in the local sports club practice.
