Objectives of this break-out session • Getting insight in business perceptions • Getting insight

Objectives of this break-out session • Getting insight in business perceptions • Getting insight in barriers for business • Getting insight in business needs : decision support tool? Ambition is 2 -dimensional: ‘extent of actions’ and ‘level of actions’ #BBNC 17

1 st DISCUSSION ROUND: EXTENT OF ACTIONS (max 25’) Where in the value chain

1 st DISCUSSION ROUND: EXTENT OF ACTIONS (max 25’) Where in the value chain should I work on biodiversity (site level, all sites or only selection of sites, supply chain, corporate level, product level), and why? q Biodiversity quick scan tools (such as GNF ‘Biodiversity Check’) give insight but is this sufficient? What could be improved? q Is this defined by materiality of your impacts/dependencies? Do you know how to define materiality? Do you know how to prioritize? q Difference between sectors? (which sectors have high I/D at level of direct operations, which sectors have most I/D in supply chain, etc. ) q Are companies aware that – apart from the direct biodiversity footprint (direct land intake) – also the indirect biodiversity footprint is relevant? (i. e. causing biodiversity impacts by means of excessive water extraction/use, water pollution, air pollution (e. g. nitrogen), noise/light emissions, …) q Are companies considering dependencies? Some sectors are highly dependent on ecosystem services such as pollination, water, seafood, timber, attractive wildlife, … #BBNC 17

2 nd DISCUSSION ROUND: LEVEL OF ACTIONS (35’) How far should I go with

2 nd DISCUSSION ROUND: LEVEL OF ACTIONS (35’) How far should I go with my actions? Should I take emblematic actions such as putting beehives at my site, or should I create natural habitats at my site? Should I restrict to the legal obligations or should I go beyond them and why? Should I go for No Net Loss, or even Net Gain? Should I apply a Planetary Boundaries approach? q. Are companies aware of all these possibilities? (this might be a first barrier) q. And assuming companies are aware of these different ambition approaches, how will they decide? • Is this dependent on the type of driver for working on biodiversity? And on the materiality of it? • Is it possible to attribute criteria for each risk type, in other words which businesses are more sensitive to certain risks? Is it only sector related or also location related? • Same question from the perspective of opportunities • Will these change over time? #BBNC 17

Drivers for working on biodiversity • Risk reduction: operational // legal // reputational //

Drivers for working on biodiversity • Risk reduction: operational // legal // reputational // access to market // access to finance • Cost reduction, e. g. extensive and nature friendly gardening of estates reduces costs • Revenue generation, e. g. eco-businesses • Employee satisfaction • Compliance to corporate policy, e. g. if corporate policy aims to achieve ‘zero impact’, this can for instance translate into No Net Loss. • Etc. #BBNC 17

Other criteria to define the level of actions? Ø Level of expertise within the company? Ø Level of support by upper hierarchy? Ø Costs? Return on Investment? Ø Enabling environment, to be provided by government and/or financial institutions? #BBNC 17
