Phase 1: Law Enforcement v “First responders” when a crime is reported v Work to prevent and respond to crimes and to protect individuals and property 4 -4

Phase 2: Prosecution v After law enforcement has investigated a crime and a suspect has been arrested, the case is referred to a prosecutor. v Prosecutor works on behalf of the citizens of a state. w Prepares and presents the case, if it goes to trial. w At sentencing, facilitates the victim impact statement (VIS) and makes recommendations for the sentence. 4 -5

Phase 3: Judiciary, The Trial Court v Judges oversee all hearings throughout the trial process. v Judges decide: w Whether or not a defendant can be released on bail. w Appointment of legal counsel. w Motions on legal issues. w What evidence to admit in a case. 4 -6

Phase 4: Probation v Probation agency w Protects the community. w Maintains public safety through supervision of offenders. w Monitors offenders’ conduct. 4 -7

Phase 5: Institutional Corrections v Department of Corrections is responsible for incarcerating offenders. v Some inmates will be eligible for parole prior to the expiration to their sentence. 4 -8

Phase 6: Parole v Supervised release of prisoners to the community. v Considered part of the prison sentence. v Victims of crime are allowed to provide a victim impact statement (VIS) to paroling authority. 4 -9

Phase 7: Appellate Courts v The convicted offender has the right to appeal—the request by the losing party to have the court review the decisions made in the trial court. 4 -10
