Native American Clans 4 th Grade ACE
What is a clan? • Clans are groups of family that include aunts, uncles, and grandparents in addition to a father, mother, and children who live together. • The Peacemaker created the clans.
Names of Clans • Each clan had a name, usually that of an animal. • Example: Bear, Wolf, Turtle, Hawk
Chiefs of Clans • Several clans formed together to create a village or band. • Each clan had it’s own chiefs. • One chief was in charge of daily life – making sure everyone was fed and clothed. • The other chief was chosen by the warriors – his job was to lead the men into battle.
Sachem • The sachem was the chief of all the clans and bands in a group. • He led meetings, called councils, with the clans to discuss problems and plans.
Facts about Clans • Clan members didn’t marry each other. • Clan members lived together in a longhouse. • Each clan had a common female ancestor. • When a child was born, he or she became part of the mother’s clan.
Which clan would you be in? • Using the worksheet provided to you, read about the characteristics of people in the Beaver, Turtle, Bear, and Hawk clans. • Think about your own attributes and rank your choice of clan from 1 (being your best choice) to 4 (last choice).
