Missouri Compromise • Sectionalism – Disagreements between different regions of the country. • Yeah – the North is not in agreement with the South! • Missouri wants to become a state!
Slave State or Free State? • Union (U. S. ) had 22 states. • 11 Free (non-slave) and 11 slave states. • Adding Missouri messes up the balance of “power”.
Missouri Compromise – Clay’s Idea! • Missouri will be a Slave State • Maine will be a “free” or non-slave state. • Any new state north of the southern Missouri border can’t be a slave state. • People still not too happy about this!
