NUS Digital Library Our Projects PERIND § § § An index to journal articles, book chapters, conference papers and book reviews relating to Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and ASEAN. Subject coverage: humanities, social sciences, architecture, building, business and management, law and medicine. Contains over 98, 000 records from 1980 onwards, with medical citations starting from 1975, and law citations from 1932 onwards. Began as card index in 1966. Available via Internet in April 1999. 17
NUS Digital Library Our Projects SMC Ondisc § § Provides easy access to over 100, 000 bibliographic information on materials pertaining to Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and ASEAN from monographs, periodical titles, conference proceedings, theses, journal articles, book chapters and book reviews. Includes three databases: 1) Singapore/Malaysia Collection 2) PERIND 3) NUS Theses Collection CD-ROM version launched in 1995; via internet in 1998 Joint project with Informit in Australia 18
NUS Digital Library Our Projects Lat Pau (�� ) § The oldest Chinese newspaper published in Singapore § Started by Mr See Ewe Lay (薛有礼) in 1881 and ceased publication in 1932 § NUS Library has digitized from 1887 -1932 19
NUS Digital Library Our Projects E-Books § Singapore University Press titles § Journal of three voyages along the coast of China in 1831, 1832, & 1833, with notices of Siam, Corea, and the Loo-Choo islands by Charles Gutzlaff. 20
NUS Digital Library Other Projects § NUS Examination Papers Contains full-text images of almost 28, 000 past examination papers of the National University of Singapore released by the Registrar's Office. § Index to Singapore Acts Comprises an index to all amendments to the Singapore statutes that are in force to date. § Index to Singapore Subsidiary Legislation Indexes all subsidiary legislation promulgated under the various Singapore acts from 1991 onwards 21

NUS Digital Library Our Services Document Delivery Services § Service was introduced in October 1998 § Orders for required documents are sent electronically to CISTI, British Library and the Australia libraries. § Use of Ariel® software to facilitate document delivery over the Internet. § Delivers documents received electronically to the desktops of our staff and students. 23
NUS Digital Library Our Services LION (Library Instruction Online) § Launched in 1999 to promote information literacy § Teaches users how to: - Locate and evaluate information - Search LINC, our Library catalogue - Search major databases - Cite references - Research a topic § Also available in the Chinese language 24
NUS Digital Library Our Services Video/Audio-on-Demand § Since June 1995, the Video-on-Demand (VOD) service was implemented via the campus network. § Licensed audio and video programmes are streamed to students’ desktops anywhere on campus via LINC, Digital Library, and IVLE (Integrated Virtual Learning Environment) § Teaching staff, together with their small tutorial groups, can watch the video in the comfort of their office. 25

NUS Digital Library Virtual Reference Service § Consists of 3 parts: § § § § depository of past reference queries FAQ of library information online interactive reference service Based on the query the system searches the depository & FAQ for possible answers. System solicits feedback from user. Will try again if user is not satisfied. From the feedback received the system will adjust its search algorithm. If user is not satisfied with the answer the system then directs the user to the online interactive reference service. 34
NUS Digital Library Online Interactive Reference Service § Allows librarian and user to communicate and see each other’s screen at the same time. § Service can only be initiated by users. § Librarian can demonstrate on his/her screen to show users what to do. § Librarian can also “get into” users’ screens to interact with them. 35

NUS Digital Library Online Materials Booking § The service facilitates the booking of materials such as VOD, AV materials, study carrels, function rooms, library equipment, etc. § Rules can be set for the booking schedules, e. g. who can book what, how many bookings per user. § Controls user’s access to study carrels, equipment by their student/staff card. 37

NUS Digital Library Intelligent Reference Assistant § Uses past experience to seek answers to users’ requests for information. § Builds a depository of associations between keywords and the profiles of documents based on feedback from users. § Profiles of documents are obtained from the index terms assigned to them or from analysis of words used in the document. § From the feedback the system tries to match the keywords with the most probable index terms assigned to the documents or the profiles of the documents. § Uses relevance feedback from users to cluster documents together. 40
