INTRODUCTION q The inaugural SA Schools Sport National Championships were staged in 2012 (Pretoria),

INTRODUCTION q The inaugural SA Schools Sport National Championships were staged in 2012 (Pretoria), followed in 2013 (Bloemfontein) 2014 and 2015 in (Pretoria). q Annually there was an increased number of sporting codes in order to incorporate all the 16 priority codes in the program. q The championships was a culmination of the schools league program where schools competed in inter-school, circuit competitions and then progressed to district, provincial and up to the National Championship. q The top schools format was implemented except in LSEN schools as well as swimming, gymnastics and goal ball which were selected teams.

INTRODUCTION q All the 16 Priority Codes participated in the National Championship including Amateur Boxing as they were the National Federation of the year. q The competition took place from the 11 – 15 December 2015 and the teams left on the 16 December. q The Opening Ceremony was held on the 10 December after all the teams had arrives and the competition resumed on the 11 Dec. q The competition was unfortunately affected by the hit wave fortunately there were no fatal cases of heatstroke. The Medical and Emergency services were at hand in dealing with all participants that needed medical attention.

BREAKDOWN OF TEAMS q Primary Schools age group (u/13 or u/14) and Secondary Schools age group (U/ 16, 17, 18 & 19) per province q LSEN Category age groups per provincial team q Technical Officials comprise of (referees, umpires, scores and table officials) per province appointed by the Provincial School Sport Code Committee q Team Manager and Team Coach for winning school team forms part of the team. q Team Managers and Team Coaches for selected Teams are appointed by the Provincial School Sport Code Committee in consultation with their National Federation.

ADMINISTRATION q q q All Provincial Team were registered by end of October 2015 The SRSA Verification Team was in Provinces from the 05 November to 05 December verifying the validity and identity of registered players, coaches, managers and technical officials. The Administration office opened Accreditation on the 05 December with advance Provincial teams arriving on the 09 December to collect their respective team Accreditation. Technical official accredited on the 10 December. Strict measured were applied on Accreditation as participants tend to lose their cards and teams changing players without noticing event organizers. The administration office gathered all the competition data and evidence in order to avoid accrediting unregistered participants and officials. An information desk of the championship was operated from Administration office.

ACCOMMODATION q Accommodation for the participating learners and their managers was at the University

ACCOMMODATION q Accommodation for the participating learners and their managers was at the University residences. Whilst Technical Officials, National Federation representatives were at the selected hotel accommodation. q All provinces learners were provided with bedding, breakfast and dinner at the hostel residences. q All learners on wheelchair were accommodated at St Georges Hotel as the University residences did not have access for wheelchair. q The only challenge at the University Residences was the fact that they did not provide meals for halaal learners and constantly prepared incorrect meals. This was however taken up with the University and they committed to correcting it as per the requirements that were provided to them.

MEDICAL SERVICES q All Provincial Teams had Medical Doctors and Physiotherapist all under the

MEDICAL SERVICES q All Provincial Teams had Medical Doctors and Physiotherapist all under the responsibility of the Chief Medical Officer. q Each venue had medical personnel and emergency services personnel. q Briefing workshop of the medical personnel took place on the 10 December when all medical personnel had arrived. LOC provided medical support during the day for all playing venues working with provincial Doctors. q After hours medical services were provided by Provincial medical teams as well as referrals to hospitals. The Chief Medical Doctor was on call on a daily basis. q There were no fatalities reported, several cases that required hospitalization were referred and monitored by CMO.

SAFETY & SECURITY q Safety and Security was provided at residences and playing venues.

SAFETY & SECURITY q Safety and Security was provided at residences and playing venues. q The LOC presented to the Tshwane Joint Operation Committee for Events and the event was approved on the basis of meeting all the compliance requirements of Safety and Security, Medical, Health and Transportation plans. q All these were presented and under a watchful eye of the appointed Chief Security Officer.

CEREMONIES q The Opening and Closing Ceremonies were held at the Rembrandt Hall at Pretoria on the 11 and 15 December respectively. q One hundred and fifty learners represented each province with the Chef de Mission, Managers and Coaches. q Provincial Teams participated in the march pass in their Provincial Team colours. q The Ceremonial activities were followed by entertainment by Dancers, music performers and comedians.

RESULTS q Each sporting code was provided with a laptop, printer and 3 G

TALENT IDENTIFICATION q The talent identification program was implemented where 32 learners were selected.

TALENT IDENTIFICATION q The talent identification program was implemented where 32 learners were selected. These learners will be taken to the National Training Centre in March 2017 in order to go through Talent confirmation protocols, in order to confirm their talent. q The learners will be further screened in preparation for their placement in Sport Focus Schools in 2017 in schools that specialize in certain / identified) sport codes for their sport development. q All the confirmed and talented learners will e placed on a Ministerial Sport Bursary until they complete Grade 12 with sport and academic support.

NEXT STEPS q The LOC has confirmed a debriefing workshop on the 12 – 13 February 2016 for all Provincial Team representatives, National Federations, Sport Code Committees. q Planning has started in earnest for the three season National Championship which is starting in March for Primary and High Schools respectively. q Develop the 4 year cycle for National Championships including Continental and International Championships. q Seek for more funding for the 3 Season National Championship and International participation.
