Goal • “To increase access to quality Health Services through the establishment of health facilities and appropriate medical placement of technologies in order to facilitate equity of access. ”
Objectives • To increase access to health services through construction/ rehabilitation of health facilities in order to facilitate equity of access to quality health services • To establish management systems for infrastructure and medical equipment at all levels • To provide optimize the availability, appropriateness, and distribution of health facilities in order to facilitate equity of access to quality health services
Objectives • To provide 85% of health facilities in Zambia with medical equipment for treatment and diagnosis by 2021 • To have 90% of medical equipment well maintained and managed by 2021
PLANNING CRITERIA FOR IDENTIFYING AREAS IN NEED OF HEALTH FACILITIES FACILITY DISTANCE POPULATION Health Posts or to be set up within 5 km radius for sparsely populated areas. 500 Households (3, 500 people) in rural areas and 1000 Households (7000 people) in the urban setting, Health Centres a catchment area of (1) 30, 000 to 50, 000 people; 29 km radius and (2) 10, 000 People Rural health centres. District Hospital/ 1 st Level Referral Facilities Every District 80, 000 – 200, 000 General Hospitals (2 nd Level) At Provincial Level 200, 000 – 800, 000 Central Hospitals (3 rd Level & Specialised Hospitals) Specialised Facilities 800, 000 plus

Key Achievements • 36 District Hospitals under Construction ountrywide • Implmenting establishment of 650 Health Posts through India Line of Credit. • Implementing estalishment of 108 mini hospitals and 3 first level hospitals. • Upgradining 3 facilities into first level hospital in Lusaka District (Chipata, Chawama and Kanyama RHCS)
Key Achievements (cont’d) • Establishment of General Hospitals in Chinsali, Petauke and Bangweulu ongoing • Establishment of a Specialist Hospital in Lusaka ongoing to be completed on 2020. • Establishment an 800 bed Specialist hospital for women and children under implementation. • Establishment of two Regional Radiotherapy Centers under implementation
Challenges • Non adherence to health infrastructure standards and guideline
Call to Action • More integration in the planning of Health Facilities • More sanitization on community ownership of public health facilities as a means to reducing maintenance and replacements costs.
