Waste Classification ØIn Canada, IAEA classification scheme has been incorporated into ØCSA standard N 292. 3 ‘Management of Low – and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste’ ØCSA new Standard N 292. 0 ‘General principles for the management of radioactive waste’ Ø Draft out for consultation ØMost existing waste has been classified under a variety of older systems by each waste owner UNRESTRICTED / ILLIMITÉ 5

OPG DGR Postclosure Safety – Relevant Features Geology ØMultiple low-permeability rock layers ØLow natural resource potential ØStable deep groundwater system, unaffected by prior glaciations ØLow permeability limits rate of resaturation into repository ØRocks are old, stable and predictable ØOrdovician rock underpressure ØSeismically quiet Waste / repository characteristics Ø 90% of wastes are low-level ØIsolated at 680 m depth ØC-14 is key nuclide at closure; ØShafts are islanded separate from waste panels ØMost long-lived radioactivity is in corrosion-resistant Zircaloy ØWaste panels are not backfilled, providing space for gases generated ØShafts will be carefully sealed, primarily with bentonite/sand UNRESTRICTED / ILLIMITÉ 9
