During 2017 -18 Nat. SIP delivered the outcomes of the contract with Df. E

During 2017 -18 Nat. SIP delivered the outcomes of the contract with Df. E to provide delivery support to early years providers, schools and post-16 providers to improve outcomes for children and young people with sensory impairment. The priorities of that contract were: 1. To enhance the capacity and knowledge of the front-line workforce 2. To develop the capacity of the broader SI sector Invitations to tender for a new 2018 -20 Df. E SEND contract encouraged a consortium approach, to embed the SEND reforms and knowledge about ‘sector specific conditions’ in schools.

Aims of the new SEND schools’ workforce contract • To drive education institutions to prioritise SEND within their CPD and school improvement plans • To equip schools to identify and meet their training needs in relation to SEND • To build the specialist workforce and promote best practice • To identify and respond to any gaps in the training and resources available for schools

SIP within the SEND schools’ workforce contract • Named partner for SI in the consortium contract • Member of a powerful SEND coalition which will reach all schools and provision • Contract uses a regional approach which can benefit CYP with LISEND and offer opportunities to SI providers • Existing Nat. SIP materials and resources on the Nat. SIP website will be supported and promoted • Specialist SI providers, both schools and services, will be offered a platform • Through engagement in the research on gaps in training of educational professionals the SI ‘postcode lottery’ can be addressed and potentially reduced

SIP activities: • Sensory Learning Hub (SLH) and online platform – deliver training to schools, EY workforce working where possible with other consortium partners • Further development of the online SI CPD platform and training log • SENCO training for SI and further development of ‘Getting Started’ • Find an SI Adviser – Nat. SIP data base • Participation in gap analysis research • Review of the Mandatory Qualifications for SI

Nat. SIP within the SEND schools’ workforce contract Can offer what the Df. E wants (in response to SEND reforms): • a joined up approach to SEND for schools • coordination of advice and resources to schools • the move away from individual contracts with ‘condition specific organisations’ • A reduction in more individual resources/guidance where there is not an identified gap Nat. SIP will work with Df. E to ensure that for CYP with SI: • there is an understanding of what risks to be lost, from the work Nat. SIP does, in the SEND schools’ workforce contract • an ongoing relationship between Df. E and Nat. SIP
