3. 01 Supervision and Consultation O Define: To give quality supervision, a social worker must contain the knowledge and skills in the field. O Significance: If information is obtained from someone out of the area of knowledge it may be incorrect or out dated. O Example of Dilemmas: Trying out a therapy with a family that you are not knowledgeable about without proper supervision or approval.
3. 02 Education and Training O Define: Social Workers should only train others within their area of knowledge with the most recent information. O Significance: To provide a safe and effective educational setting O Example of Dilemmas: When a teacher does not show cultural competency when talking with patients in front of student.
3. 03 Performance Evaluation O Define: When evaluating the performance of others it should be completed fairly and based on only specific criteria. O Significance: Other factors are eliminated as well as feelings or biases while evaluating performance of others. O Example of Dilemmas: When asked to evaluate a student, who happens to be a close friend, do you make her look good or tell the truth.
3. 04 Client Records O Define: Social workers must make sure information is correct, record only appropriate information after delivering services and keep records. O Significance: If the information isn’t accurate other staff members will be misinformed. Properly store documents to protect client’s privacy. O Example of Dilemmas: The client tells the social worker about information that isn’t relevant to your services, but seem to be causing other problems.
3. 05 Billing O Define: Document the billing that is fair, reasonable, and appropriate with the services performed and who provided the service. O Significance: accurately reflection the nature and extent of services provided. O Example of Dilemmas: When insurance doesn’t cover one diagnosis, so the social worker bills under a different diagnosis bills that insurance covers.
3. 06 Client Transfer O Define: Potential clients thinking of transfer should be briefed on possible outcomes of the transfer. O Significance: Both the client and social worker should understand fully why the transfer is happening and the possible benefits or risks that could occur O Example of Dilemmas: Accepting a client transfer from a colleague when this is a pattern of avoidance
3. 07 Administration O Define: Social Worker administration should promote the well -being of their employees and clients inside and outside the agency O Significance: To provide a safe and effective work environment O Example of Dilemmas: Administration turning a blind-eye when an employee breaks the Code of Ethics
3. 08 Continuing Education and Staff Development O Define: Social work administrators should take reasonable steps to provide or arrange for continuing education and staff development for all staff O Significance: Promoting competent employees O Example of Dilemmas: Refusing to allow employees attend workshops
3. 09 Commitments to Employers O Define: Social workers should promote the betterment of employers and agencies O Significance: To provide a safe and effective work environment and relationship between employee and employer O Example of Dilemmas: Staying silent when employer is racially discriminating
3. 10 Labor Management Disputes O Define: Social workers have the right to join or form labor unions. When a part of a labor union, social workers stay within the code of ethics and be professional O Significance: Keeping the client in mind and the impact it might have on them O Example of Dilemmas: Going on strike at a residential facility with clients needing assistance
