How do I write a good beginning?
A Good Beginning A good beginning starts one of four ways: Thought or question Dialogue Action Sound
Beginnings Thought or question: Use what the writer is thinking or feeling at the beginning of the story to begin. – Ex: “I always wondered what would happen if I didn’t drink my milk at dinner like mom told me. ”
Beginnings Dialogue: The main character will be talking to another character. Ex: “Kate, I told you to always drink your milk. ” “Mom, I don’t like it and it tastes awful. ”
Beginnings Action: The main character is physically doing something related to the story. Ex: I dumped my milk down the drain in the kitchen and quickly ran the water so there would be no evidence.
Beginnings Sound: Use a sound related to the story to catch a readers attention. Ex: “Swoosh, ” was the last thing I heard from my milk as I dumped it down the drain at dinner.
