Narrative Techniques Flashback vs. Flash-forward vs. Foreshadowing

A flashback occurs when the writer inserts details from the past into a present narrative (what is happening right now) What is a flashback? Why is it important? A flashback provides necessary plot information about a character’s past or insight into why a character might do certain things or act a certain way. It usually shows important scenes from the past that reveals unknown character traits or dilemmas.

A flash-forward occurs when you read about or see an event that has yet to happen in the present narrative. What is flashforward? Why is it important? Flash-forwards show the reader or viewer exactly what will happen in the future, even though the reader may not have enough information to make sense of this detail yet.
