Narrative Project Lucy Tobitt
Story – Jeff Wall: Insomnia Steve was going about his normal day. He decided to plan a dinner date with his girlfriend. He decided to cook something special for his love. It got later and later, darker and darker. She didn’t turn up. There was sudden banging on the door. As he walked into the hall he saw a tall black figure standing outside his door. Steve knew it wasn’t his girlfriend but it was too late as the tall black figure already saw his standing there. Steve gathered very quickly that this man wanted to rob his house. The man shouted and shouted to open the door but Steve didn’t. The man kicked the door down. Steve panicked and tried to run away but the man pushed him forcefully to the floor. Steve suffers from panicked attacks when under pressure or scared. The only thing that calms him down is breathing into his paper bag left on his fridge. The man saw Steve trying to get up but pushed him back down. He started to have a panic attack and sweat profusely. The man didn’t know what to do so he checked a few cupboards moved a few stuff and ran away. Steve was left under the table shaking and scared with his kitchen messed up.
Photographer: Gregory Crewdson This photograph was photographed by Gregory Crewdson. It shows a young girl standing outside of her house with only underwear on and her mother and sister looking at her very confused and disappointed. The young girl is clearly upset and embarrassed as she is standing awkwardly and her head is looking down trying not to look them in the eye. There is shopping on the ground which could mean that she got a fright at first but then realised that maybe this happened before and knows what is happening.
Photographer: Jeff Wall This photograph was photographed by Jeff Wall. In this photograph there is a man in a very small house that is only one room and it is filled with light bulbs that are either broken or working but most of them are broken. From this photograph the only thing I can get is that he may either like to collect light bulbs and try fix them or he might do this as his day job and fix light bulbs for his customers. It shows that he spends most of his time doing this as his room is a mess and the washing isn’t cleaned up.
Photographer: Philip Lorca di. Corcia This photograph was photographed by Philip Lorca di. Corcia. It shows a man on the ground with his glasses and a newspaper on the ground also. He could of been either attacked or have just fallen by himself. There is no one around to help him get up and back on his feet. To me it looks like he hurt either his legs or feet due to the way he is positioned on the ground making it hard for him to get himself up. It also doesn’t help that his glasses are on the ground too making him not being able to see.
Photographer: Cindy Sherman This photograph was photographed by Cindy Sherman. From my knowledge of Cindy Sherman I know that she is an older photographer resulting in this photograph being in black and white. In the olden days women were “supposed” to be in the kitchen making food and washing up for their husbands. To me this woman looks distracted while trying to wash up. It looks like she would rather be doing something else than being in that kitchen for any longer than she has to be.
Photographer Research: Lyndon Wade • Lyndon was born in Kansas City. • When he was only 18 years of age he got called to photograph an advert for animal food in LA. • Lyndon’s brother David Wade set up his own photography studio in Kansas City and they joined together to form “The Wade Brothers”. • Lyndon is very confident about his photographs he captures and says that he has his own style. • He uses a narrative style in his photographs showing us that there is a story happening in that photo. • Lyndon is self taught photography and prefers to stay away from Photoshop as much as possible and captures mostly with camera. • He prefers to shoot on the studio and to be in control of everything. • He does not always photograph with his brother, he has done some personal projects himself.
Research: Lyndon Wade We can see that these photographs are a narrative style as when we look at them they are telling a story. My two favourites are the man sitting with a pile of money and the two boys in their parents room. When looking at these I can automatically form a story in my head of what’s happening. The man sitting with a pile of money looks unhappy therefore showing us the message that money can’t buy you happiness. The photograph of the two boys in their parents room lighting fireworks while their parents are in bed passed out shows us that parents need to be more careful having dangerous items in the house while children are around and they need to bed awake before their children so they can look after them.
Photographer Research: Ryan Schude • Schude is originally from Midwest but now has lived in LA since 1997. • Before starting photography he was in business school and joined a photography club for fun. • He moved to LA as it was the centre of the photography industy. He did not want to move but he felt like he had to to get somewhere. • He is huge into narrative and staged photography. • When he was starting out as a photographer he was a photo editor in a magazine company for three years. • He has one photo impatcular that he feels started out his narrative style. That photo is of a boy in a boxing arena surrounded with his friends. • He describes his style as cinematic and it took him 15 years to learn and develop it and he is still learning and making changes. • He would like to take photographs in one take but says it is too difficult to achieve that so he captures them in a few shots.
Research: Ryan Schude We can see that these photographs are a narrative style as when we look at them they are telling a story. My two favourites are the boy in the boxing ring and the pool party. When looking at the photograph of the boy in the boxing ring it looks like be won a match and is holding up some sort of trophy while all of his friends are cheering him on. In the pool party it looks like everyone has gotten drunk and are gone crazy jumping into the pool and from the roof.
Photographers Research: Erwin Olaf • • • Erwin is a Dutch photographer. • • • Some of the topics he likes to raise awareness for are class, race, sexual tastes, beliefs and habbits. He was born on the 2 nd of July in the Netherlands. He is currently living in Amsterdam. Erwin is most famous for commercial and personal work he has produced. He describes his work as “daring” and “provocative”. He likes to show people things they would not see in normal day to day life to raise awareness on that particular topic. One of his earlier photographs he captured was banned as there was nudity in it. He has won many awards and has travelled world wide. Erwin studied journalism in the School Of Journalism. His work is now in galleries and museums all around the world.
Research: Erwin Olaf We can see that these photographs are a narrative style as when we look at them they are telling a story. My two favourites are of the boy pointing at the black man and the woman crying. In the picture of the boy pointing it looks like he was raised in a push area/house. I formed that idea from the way he is dressed. He is pointing at the black man thinking he is less than him due to his colour but in the picture it shows us that the man has medals all over him showing us that he is successful. In the photograph of the woman crying it could mean anything. Someone may have died, she may have heard bad news, or her husband may have left her.
Photographers Research: Nita Vera • Nita is from Amsterdam, North Holland • She is 29 years of age. • She uses narrative imagery in her photographs. She is most known for her project called “Family Constellations”. • In this project it shows the different relationships between each family member with each other. • She creates, stages and directs all of her photographs. She loves to be in control and to make it her own. • Every photograph Nita has taken comes from personal experiences and observations. • All of them experiences and observations made her want to create her own project. • When she photographed people for her project she got people she hardly knew so she could see how they react and see how they show their emotion. • Nita used lighting to create the tension between the people she would photograph. • Every person she captured she picked straight from the street and worked and got to know them slowly.
Research : Nita Vera We can see that these photographs are a narrative style as when we look at them they are telling a story. My two favourite photographs are of the girl with the dog and the boy with his skateboard. In the photograph of the little girl it shows her trying to sneak in a dog without her mum finding out. In the photograph of the boy with the skateboard it looks like he was either sad because he was not allowed out with his friends or it could be that he is with his friends but they are not talking to him and leaving him out.
