NARRATIVE PARADIGM • Narrative theory was developed by Walter Fisher obtained his Ph. D. from the University of Iowa in 1960 and went on to become a professor, among other things. Perhaps Fisher’s most notable contribution was his formulation of the narrative approach to rhetoric and communication theory. In 1979 he was awarded the Golden Anniversary Monograph Award from the Speech Communication Association for the article that introduced narrative theory to the field of communication. However, as is the case with most new theories, narrative theory was not totally accepted by the discipline (Miller, 2005, p. 92). Narrative theory clashed with several pre-existing beliefs as to the nature of human beings and how they communicate and act. CRITICS RATIONAL WORLD PARADIGM Is "a scientific or philosophical approach to knowledge that assumes people are logical, making decisions on the basis of evidence and lines of argument" There are five assumptions of the prevailing rational-world paradigm: 1. People are essentially rational 2. We make decisions on the basis of arguments 3. The type of speaking situation (legal, scientific, legislative) determines the course of our argument 4. Rationality is determined by how much we know and how well we argue 5. The world is a set of logical puzzles that we can solve through rational analysis

DONKEY IN THE WELL One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over & help him. They all grabbed dirt & began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey didn't realized what was happening & cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off & take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off & take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well & happily trotted off. . !!! What’s the moral of the story? ? ?
