What are Narrative Compositions? • Narratives are stories. Narratives are plots. They are essays that tell a story — hopefully in an interesting way — that also convey themes. Often, if you are asked to write a narrative essay, you will be asked to use your imagination instead of doing research. The writing of it may come more easily to you for you, as do not need to quote anything from specific books or articles.

Tips for narrative writing 1. Choose a title 2. Make sure your story is well structured using a clear introduction, problem, climax and conclusion. 3. Describe the atmosphere, for example, sad, eerie, fun… 4. Choose the first person narrative or third person and stick to it

4. Focus on one or two characters 5. Give your main characters rounded personalities and life 6. Keep the time scale and plot short 7. Stick to the past tenses 8. Use the senses (hearing, sight, taste) to describe the setting or place 9. Use interesting words – avoid nice, good, bad, weak.

10. Do not use abbreviations such as etc, eg, ok 11. Make sure your ending does not tail off disappointingly. Use an unexpected ending or a clear sharp ending sentence. 12. Check your story!! Reread your composition before handing it in. Check for stupid mistakes in spelling, punctuation, capital letters…
