About the TB Service North Central London South Hub Our aim is to reduce the number of people getting active TB and provide effective treatment for those who have TB.
Role of TB Nurse team • Open access clinics – assess and order tests accordingly and refer to relevant clinicians – identifying those who may have TB. • Induced Sputum -Purpose Built Induced Sputum Room. • Supporting patients on TB treatment and their families throughout course of medication in the community and in clinic. • Contact tracing – household/close friends/incidents i. e. hostels/schools/prison/ workplaces. • Inpatients at UCH/Whittington and Queens Square visited weekly. • Education. • Work with Public Health England/MXU/Prisons/ Find and Treat.
Supporting Patients • Counselling about medications. • Addressing contact tracing can be difficult due to STIGMA. • STIGMA – cases of eviction/shunned by family/lost job/children isolated by other parents. • Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) – study DOT/VOT. DOT Outreach team. • Social Issues – Access to Social Worker - getting a GP/Benefits/Housing/ immigration/ drug detox. • Patient incentives.

Audit of Nurse Led Open Access Clinic • Outcomes of patients who self referred between 1 st May 2014 – 10 th august 2015 were reviewed. Results 311 patients attended the open-access walk-in service 111 patients had been advised to attend by: GP 49, A&E 14, Mobile X-ray unit 6, Occupational Health 8, Other 34. 19/111 (17%) were notified with active TB 200 patients were self referrals: 8/200 (4%) were notified with active TB, 2 of whom referred themselves via our website
