SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF SOCIAL MOVEMENTS First, they are challengers to or defenders of existing institutional structures or systems of authority Second, they are collective rather than individual enterprises Third, they act outside of organizational arrangements, existing institutional or Fourth, they operate with some degree of organization, ranging from a single social movement organization to a network or coalition of movement organizations Fifth, they typically do so with some degree of temporal continuity.
