Nanotechnology & “Smart Textiles” FACS - TLC
What are some things that you don’t like about your clothes?
Possible Clothing Issues: • Shrink • Fade • Stain • Odor • Color • Too Big • Too Small • Too Hot • Too Cold • Wrinkles
All of these issues can be “fixed” through Nanotechnology!
Applications of Nanotechnology include: • Stain/odor-free clothing & carpet • Bug-repellant clothing • Military uniforms that change color to match the environment • Light weight bullet-proof vests • Clothing that scans your body for a perfect fit • Etc. .
Nanotechnology: is a complex field combining science (biology, chemistry & physics), information technology (computer programming), engineering (electronics & design) and mathematics.
Nanotechnology: "Nano" is a Greek word for small or dwarf. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Nanometers are so small that 150, 000 of them fit across the width of a strand of human hair!
Nanotechnology: Is not only being used for clothes, but in many different industries including medical, defense and aviation. Working in nanotechnology requires working with very small materials and devices.
Team Activity • Read assigned nanotechnology article and view on-line video • Complete worksheet • Choose a team leader • Team leader present findings to class when instructed to do so by teacher
Listening Skills Review • Look at, and listen to the speaker • No talking or doodling • Sit up straight • Nod for understanding
Presentation Skills Review • Don’t cover your face with your paper • Stand still and straight • Speak clearly and loudly • Don’t rush, speak slowly • Don’t distract from the topic
Individual Activity • Complete Nanotechnology Presentation Worksheet during team leader presentations
Review Points • Nanotechnology is a new and growing field • Courses to take in jr. high and high school to prepare for a nanotechnology career include: – – – Science (biology, chemistry, physics) Math Information Technology (computer programming) – Health Sciences (biotechnology) – Technology (electronics, engineering & drafting)
