INTRODUCTION • The evolution of standardized nursing languages (SNLs) has been occurring for more than four decades. • The importance of this work continues to be acknowledged as an effective strategy to describe professional nursing practice. • The demand for cost-effective, safe, quality patient care is now an essential mandate embedded in both global or national health reform policies. • Communicating the contributions of professional nursing practice to other nurses, health providers, and other members of the health care team requires the articulation of nursing's focus of concern and responses to these concerns to improve patient outcomes.

INTRODUCTION • When SNLs is utilized and documented in the patients case note or health record , it provides opportunities for others to see and track what nurses do. • This also affords nurses an opportunity to describe the focus of their practice through the identification of nursing diagnosis, interventions and outcomes (IOM, 2010). • The practice of nursing always generate data that could be used to provide new knowledge, improve practice and justify staffing, remuneration and many other issues. • Many times other professionals work in to use such data to meet their own needs.

WHAT IS RESEARCH • Research is a process to discover new knowledge. • “A systematic investigation (i. e. , the gathering and analysis of information) designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. ” • The main objective of research is to “extend human knowledge beyond what is already known. ” • However Research is very different from other forms of discovering knowledge (like reading a book) because it uses a systematic process called the Scientific Method.

TYPES OF RESEARCH • Applied research: study that seeks to solve practical problems. It is used to provide solutions to everyday problem. Most nursing studies are applied research. • Basic or pure research: main motivation is to expand knowledge driver by the researchers curiosity

TYPES OF RESEARCH • Correlational research: is systematic study of relationship between two variables without establishing cause and effect. • Descriptive research : provides accurate picture of characteristics of individual situation or group. • Descriptive studies are a means of discovering new meanings, describing what exists, determining frequency of occurrence and categorizing events

TYPES OF RESEARCH • Experimental research: an objective systematic controlled investigation for the purpose of predicting and controlling phenomena and examining the probability and causality among variables. • Historical research involves examining events that occurred in the past remote or recent

POSSIBLE AREAS OF RESEARCH • Nursing diagnosis : Diagnostic labels are constantly been reviewed to create new diagnostic labels (see pp 42, 43 of the book) • an announcement is usually made and interested researchers clinicians that have made observations will apply. • Usually after a thorough search of the literature to provide evidence and support for their observations.

POSSIBLE AREAS OF RESEARCH • Nursing Intervention: as nurses observe interaction between intervention and outcome • Problems should be identified is the identified intervention giving projected outcomes • If yes what are associated factors ? • if not what are the associated factors are client’s factors influencing issues

POSSIBLE AREAS OF RESEARCH • Nursing outcomes should also be observed for reliability and deviations • We should always observe differences and apply critical thinking to establish problems for research • We may also identify the influence of cultural differences as SNLs are being refined

IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH TO SNL UTILIZATION • Continued development, testing, and refinement (RESEARCH) of SNLs offer nursing an accurate and reliable way to use data elements across populations and settings to communicate nursing practice, • enable nursing administrators and leaders in health care to explain with evidence needed resources, • cost out nursing care with greater precision, • and design new models of care that reflect nursepatient ratios and patient acuity that are data driven (Pesut & Herman, 1998).

IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH TO SNL UTILIZATION • Data generation for research and findings will provide the needed evidence that would help link nursing knowledge to evidence-driven, cost-effective, quality outcomes • Research findings will more accurately reflect nursing's impact on patient care as well as the health care system. • The evaluation of research to support the development, use, and continued refinement of nursing language is critical to research and the transformation of patient care by nurses on a global level.
