Mission and Scope Proposed Changes Mission: To explore changes to the environment, including new and future technologies, the impact of market place and/or regulatory changes and innovations on telephone numbering. Scope: The Working Group will investigate new telephone numbering assignment approaches and future telephone number assignment requirements in cooperation with other industry forums/committees as appropriate. The Working Group will identify trends and assess their impact upon numbering resources. The Working Group, if necessary, will analyze potential changes to numbering administration and use common criteria to determine the feasibility and benefit of each and report its findings to the NANC. The Working Group will also analyze various topics that may be given to it from time to time by the NANC and/or FCC. Fo. N July 2006 NANC Report 4

Meeting Progress/Activities Technology Enablers/Influences: • Choice of TNs from any area code • Use of device “address book” instead of TN • Telephony “devices” support dialing numerous types of addresses beyond TNs, e. g. , SIP URIs • A new Mobility - Movement among several Fixed/Mobile IP Devices (contact addresses) or networks. • Use of a single address, e. g. , SIP URI, can be used to reach individual at any/all of their contact addresses. Meeting Progress/Activities End User Habits/Influences: • Numbers are stored and accessed. – Mobile numbers are stored more often – Fixed numbers are remembered • What a TN tell us about the “destination. ” – Locality: Potential Supplier/Time of Day – Cost Relativity – Business: Dispatch/Marketing – Fixed Device becomes a Communal Phone – Mobile / Nomadic Device becomes a Personal Phone Fo. Meeting Progress/Activities New Addressing Scheme Options/Influences: Impact of competing electronic addressing schemes – Telephone Numbers represented by phrases – IP addresses represented by numbers – Domain Names or phrases mapped to IP addresses – ENUM bridging the PSTN with the IP network via telephone numbers – ENUM as a book of addresses identifying a multitude of services represented by URIs – Private naming addresses within social networking services, e. g. , Skype, My.
