NAMING SKELETAL MUSCLES Gretel Flores Period 5 12/12

DIRECTION OF THE MUSCLE FIBERS: v. Some muscles are named in reference to some

DIRECTION OF THE MUSCLE FIBERS: v. Some muscles are named in reference to some imaginary line, the midline of the body or the long axis of a limb bone. v. Example: Rectus (straight): Its fibers run parallel to that imaginary line. -Rectus Femoris is the straight muscle of the thigh. Oblique: Its orientation is that at an angle to the longitudinal axis.

RELATIVE SIZE: v. When more than one muscle are in the same location, they

RELATIVE SIZE: v. When more than one muscle are in the same location, they can be identified by their relative size. v. Example: Maximus for largest Minimus for smallest Gluteus Maximus is called such because it is largest muscle of the glutes. Gluteus Minimus is the smallest of the three gluteal muscles. Longus for longest Peroneus Longus is the longest bone of the three fibularis muscles. Brevis for shortest Extensor carpi radialis brevis is the shortest muscle in the foreman that acts to extend the wrist. Cuneiform bones are the medial bones in the foot. Intermedius for middle

LOCATION OF THE MUSCLE: v. Some bones are named based on the bones they

LOCATION OF THE MUSCLE: v. Some bones are named based on the bones they are surrounded by or the region of the body they are founded in. v. Example: Temporalis and frontalis muscles overlie the temporal and frontal bones of the skull.

NUMBER OF ORIGINS: v. A muscle that has more than one attachment at locations

NUMBER OF ORIGINS: v. A muscle that has more than one attachment at locations that do not move and only one attachment at the location that does move, is said to have more than one head. v. Example: Biceps have 2 heads, Triceps have 3, and Quadriceps have 4 heads.

LOCATION OF THE ORIGIN AND INSERTION: v. Muscles are named for their attachment sites.

LOCATION OF THE ORIGIN AND INSERTION: v. Muscles are named for their attachment sites. v. Example: Sternocleidomastoid muscle has its origin on the sternum and clavicle and inserts on the mastoid process of the temporal bone. Brachioradialis attaches at the humerus (origin) and the radius (insertion).

SHAPE: v. Some muscles are named referring to their shape. v. Example: Deltoid muscle

SHAPE: v. Some muscles are named referring to their shape. v. Example: Deltoid muscle is triangular, and deltoid means triangular. Orbicularis muscle is circular. Trapezius muscle is shaped like a trapezoid.

ACTION: v. Some muscles are named by their actions. v. Examples: Flexor, exntensor, adductor,

ACTION: v. Some muscles are named by their actions. v. Examples: Flexor, exntensor, adductor, and abductor, Flexor carpi radialis- flexes wrist. Abductor magnus- abducts the thigh. Extensor digitorum- extends the fingers. Levator- lifts a structure.
