Naming Hydrocarbons Todays Agenda 1 Go over homework
Naming Hydrocarbons
Today’s Agenda: 1. Go over homework (10 mins) 2. Notes: Naming Alkanes 3. Worksheet: Practice with naming Alkanes
How can we describe Hydrocarbons?
Representing Hydrocarbons: CONDENSED Structural Formula: Not all molecules are drawn Structural Formula: All molecules are drawn Bond-Line Structure: CORNERS represent CARBONS. Molecular Formula: Represents the compound with the chemical names & numbers of each element. EX: C 7 H 12
For the following MOLECULAR Formula: C H 1. Sketch the STRUCTURAL formula 2. Sketch the CONDENSED structural formula 3. Sketch the BOND-LINE structure 5 12
Aromatic vs. Aliphatic Aromatic: Have a BENZENE ring Have Ex: AROMATIC COMPOUNDS: a scent Incense Aliphatic: Do NOT have a benzene ring (everything else!)
Alkanes, Alkenes & Alkynes: These are all examples of ALIPHATIC COMPOUNDS
Simple Hydrocarbons Alkanes Only single bonds are present # of C Atoms Prefix 1 Meth- 2 Eth- 3 Prop- 4 But- 5 Pent- 6 Hex- 7 Hept- 8 Oct- 9 Non- 10 Dec-
HOMEWORK On Blackboard, print out the worksheets “hydrocarbons 1” and “hydrocarbons 2”. Complete these for TUESDAY.
Warm Up: For the molecule NONANE: Write the molecular formula Draw the structural formula
Today’s Agenda 1. Warm Up 2. Go over homework 3. Notes: Naming Alkanes 4. Practice with Alkanes
Homework Assignments: Coming Up Due TODAY: Hydrocarbons 1 & Hydrocarbons 2 Had trouble? You may come for help and submit your work TOMORROW with no points off (only this time!) Due TOMORROW: Online Blackboard Quiz (Lab Quiz #2) Due WEDNESDAY: Alkanes 1 & Alkanes 2 worksheets
Tomorrow’s Lab: Same lab groups as last time. Topic: What is the relationship between temperature rise and Carbon Dioxide? Complete lab quiz before the start of lab (found on Blackboard) and read the lab instructions individually Materials to bring in (per group) 1 lab manuel (found on Blackboard) Computer with logger pro Rulers Plastic Wrap Tape Gloves Soil
Simple Hydrocarbons Alkanes Molecular Formula: Cn. H 2 n+2 Methane (1 C) C 1 H 2(1)+2=C 2 H 4 Ethane (2 C) C 2 H 2(2)+2=C 2 H 6 Ethane (3 C) C 3 H 3(2)+2=C 2 H 8
Review: Structural Formula: Shows what a molecule looks like. Molecular Formula: Shows the number of each element found in a compound Ex: C 6 H 10 Linear vs. Branched: Cyclic vs. Noncyclic: Cyclic is a ring; non-cyclic is not. Aromatic: Have BENZENE rings! Aliphatic: No BENZENE rings! Saturated vs. Unsaturated: UNSATURATED have double bonds; SATURATED do not.
Naming BRANCHED Alkanes
Naming Simple Alkanes 1. Find the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms. It does not have to be in a straight line. This is the “parent” chain. State the number of carbon atoms using the appropriate prefix and the ending “ane. ” (propane)
Naming Simple Alkanes 2. Branches are called “alkyl” groups. Number the carbon atoms in the parent chain starting at the end closest to the branches
Naming Simple Alkanes 3. Name each branch. Give a prefix according to the number of carbon atoms it contains. Branch names end in “yl” instead of “ane” (Methyl)
Naming Simple Alkanes 3. Name each branch. List the branches in alphabetical order. If more than one branch have the same number of carbon atoms, use the prefixes “di” (two), “tri” (three) and “tetra” (four).
Naming Simple Alkanes 4. State the name of the alkane by naming each branch, then naming the parent. Use commas between numbers and hyphens between numbers and branches. 2 -methylbutane
Naming Simple Alkanes 1. Parent Chain. 2. Number the parent chain. 3. Name the branches. 4. Name the compound 2, 3, 4 -trimethylpentane
Naming Simple Alkanes 1. Parent Chain. 2. Number the parent chain. 3. Name the branches. 4. Name the compound 2, 2, 4 -trimethylpentane
Naming Simple Alkanes 1. Parent Chain. 2. Number the parent chain. 3. Name the branches. 4. Name the compound 2, 2, 4 -trimethylpentane
Naming Simple Alkanes 1. Parent Chain. 2. Number the parent chain. 3. Name the branches. 4. Name the compound 3, 3 -diethylhexane
Naming Simple Alkanes 1. Parent Chain. 2. Number the parent chain. 3. Name the branches. 4. Name the compound 3 -ethyl-4, 5 -dipropyloctane
Your Assignment: Complete the Alkanes practice worksheet with a partner. Homework: Complete Alkanes 1 & 2 worksheets.
