True or False § Egypt’s carbon emissions are low = 2. 6 tonnes of greenhouse gases person per year § True § The World average is 5. 6 tonnes of greenhouse gases person per year § False, it is 6. 8 tonnes person per year § In the UK the average emissions person per year is 9. 4 § False, it is 11 § Egypt’s 75 million people produce less than 1% of the whole world’s total green house gas emissions § True
Egypt in drawn map form and as a satellite image How could climate change affect people worldwide?
§ In Egypt, a developing country in Africa, climate change will pose a significant problem. If sea levels rise by 50 cm, due to thermal expansion, one third of the coastal city of Alexandria will be flooded. This would mean over 7 million people being displaced. A reduction in precipitation may mean other African countries, such as Uganda, will dam the River Nile upstream. This will result in less irrigation water and possible crop failure. This could lead to widespread famine in Egypt.
Exam question § “The consequences of global climate change are determined by § § poverty. ” Discuss the Statement with reference to examples. (15 marks) Discuss the consequences of Global warming. Likely to include rising sea levels etc. Link the consequences to poverty – more likely to affect poor populations than rich as they live in marginal areas with high risk. Without coping mechanisms such as insurance they are more vulnerable. Whereas wealthy countries can adopt protection strategies such as coastal defence. High end marks will be given to candidates who discuss a range of consequences and include at least two examples.
