Name: ________ ELA Class: _______ Class syllabus Your Binder: ENGLISH CLASS 9 th Grade, 2017 -2018 Welcome! … to ninth grade! Get ready for a challenging but awesome year. I am so excited to get to know you and to help you grow as a reader, writer, editor, and speaker, as well as to prepare you for high school and your life beyond education. Bring to Class • Binder • Independent reading book (at all times!) • Pen or pencil • Paper • Textbooks/novels Document Formatting Anytime you are submitting a typed document (either printing it or turning it in electronically), make sure it includes the following MLA guidelines: • Heading on first page (left justified), containing your name, class period, assignment title, and due date • Centered title (follow rules for proper title format) • 1” margins • Double spacing • Times New Roman 12 pt. font • No extra spaces between paragraphs (or between headings and titles) Class Rules: 1. Be on-time, on-task, and prepared to learn EVERY DAY! 2. Keep all personal electronics put away. Cell phones are not to be used or seen once you walk into the room. 3. Be responsible for your own learning. 4. RESPECT the teacher, the classroom, and other students! 5. Trash goes in the appropriate trash container. Getting Help There’s more than one way! 1. Before school or after school: Ask for an appointment to meet. 2. At school: During Chieftain Time, study hall, etc. 3. Email: Email me. Using Technology: We will use the following websites/software regularly on school devices: • Schoology • Google Apps (Docs, Slides, and Drive) • Turnitin Remember to follow school policies for technology use and to keep track of your own usernames and passwords! If you forget your login, I might not be able to help you get immediate access! The system you will use to organize your class materials is a binder. Your binder (for English class only) will need to be organized from first handout to the current handout. Each handout should have a date on it to help organize your binder. The binder will include the following: • Final drafts of writing • Grammar/Vocabulary worksheets/handouts • Current unit papers • Papers to save for exams • Notes Literature We Will Read Here’s what we plan to read this year: • Greek Mythology • Odyssey (Homer) • Speak (Anderson) • Night (Wiesel) • The Wave (Strasser) • Romeo & Juliet (Shakespeare) • Writing with Power • Literature & Language On occasion, we will read in class; however, you will be expected to read assigned pages on your own. Class syllabus Continued 9 th Grade English, 2017 -2018 Absence Policy/Make up Work If you miss a class for any reason, here’s what to do: q Check the absent tray for any handouts. Then talk to me about the work or to set up a time to make up a quiz or test. q Turn in any projects or assignments that were due on the day(s) you were absent. q Be prepare to take a missed test or quiz ASAP. q Pre-excused absences will be expected to be completed before your leave. This course uses a modified standards based learning/grading system. Your quarter grades will be based on: Finding & Using Books for Independent Reading *NOTE: All work must be submitted three days prior to the date of the grade check if it is to be included in that grade check. In this class, you will need to find and carry an independent reading book with you to every English class. (More details about our independent reading requirements are on another paper. ) The books you choose must be: q School appropriate q Ones that your parents would approve of q An appropriate length q An appropriate reading level (not too easy or too difficult) If I have a concern about a book you’re reading, I’m allowed to “veto” it or contact your parent(s) if necessary. Grading Scale 90 -100 80 -89 70 -79 60 -69 0 -59 A B C D F • 80% summative assessments (quizzes, tests, essays, projects, speeches, etc. ) • 20% formative assessments (exit tickets, etc. ) Late Work There will be no reduction in grade for homework turned in late. The only work that would not be able to be submitted late is work that is considered a homework check (HWC) which is something that would be gone over in class that day. Retake Policy You will be allowed to retake quizzes and tests in this course. If you wish to do a retake, you will need to do the following steps: 1. Print and complete the Request to Retake form (on Schoology). 2. Complete review information/activity on retake form. 3. Notify me and turn in the form. (In order for the retake to be considered in the grade check timelines, retakes need to be taken 3 days prior to grade checks. ) 4. Set up time and complete the retake. NOTE: The most current grade will be the grade that is entered in the gradebook. Standards Based Grading Scale On your formative assessments, you will see the following grades: Mastery (M= 4 pts. ) • Mastery of the target(s) is demonstrated, and organized work leads to a detailed conclusion. • Student voice: I could teach a friend or do problems for which I haven’t seen examples. Proficient (P=3. 4 pts. ) • Mastery of the target is demonstrated, but there is a minor concept error. • Student voice: I can correctly do almost anything you’ve shown me without help. Developing (D=2. 8 pts. ) • Some understanding of the target is demonstrated, but not mastery. There is a major concept error present. • Student voice: I can correctly do some things you’ve shown me without help. Emerging (E=2. 2 pts. ) • A very basic understanding of the target is demonstrated, but the work is incomplete or has significant errors. • Student voice: I can correctly do a few things without help. Not There Yet (N=1. 6 pts. ) • The standard has been assessed, but the student’s work does not indicate knowledge of the concept or is not an appropriate method to lead to the conclusion. • Student voice: I cannot correctly do any part of the skills without help.
