MYSTERY OF THE BONES Anatomy Week 18
MYSTERY OF THE BONES! v The Scene v In a quiet camping area known as Crystal Lake, four complete human skeletons were found in the mud when the lake began to dry during a drought. Detectives checked the missing person's reports for people in the area and found that five people had disappeared from that area over the last 10 years. v Oddly, the skeletons were almost completely intact due to being somewhat preserved in the clay at the bottom of the lake.

INSTRUCTIONS v 1. Each group should pick a bone set and reconstruct the skeleton using glue, scissors and tape. v 2. Each bone of the skeleton should be labeled v 3. Next your small groups will need to determine the identity of the bones based on age and height v a. Determine the gender of your subject by looking at the shapes of specific bones v b. Use the following formula to determine the height of your subject v Your paper skeleton is not a real skeleton. Assume that 1 cm on your paper skeleton = 8. 6 cm on the real skeleton • Male (real) (2. 32 x length of the femur in cm. ) +65. 53 ± 3. 94 • Female (real) (2. 47 x length of the femur in cm. ) + 54. 10 ± 3. 72 v 4. In your notebook, include information about the gender and height of the skeleton and describe your reasoning for your claims (include formulas or arrows to bones, etc)
DETERMINING AGE v Each of the skulls from the subjects were examined in detail. See if you can determine their age (either over 35 or under 35) by the sagittal sutures. v Remember that sutures close fully by the age of 35. v On your skeleton reconstruction page, note whether the skull indicates the person is over 35, or under 35.
THE MISSING PERSONS v Name: Sara Munchausen v Age: 21 v Height: 5'0 v Weight: 105 lbs
THE MISSING PERSONS v Name: Jamie Matthews v Age: 18 v Height: 6'2 v Weight: 190 lbs
THE MISSING PERSONS v Name: Neil Baxter v Age: 22 v Height: 6'1 v Weight: 210 lbs

PREDICTION v As a group, make a prediction about which of the four skeletons might belong to our missing persons and describe the evidence to back up your prediction.
FACIAL RECONSTRUCTION
YOUR SUMMATIVE v Write a one to two page paper describing the scientific process of your investigation • • • The problem Background information/Context The data Your prediction based on your data And the results and analysis of your prediction after seeing the facial reconstructions. • Also include a reflection on the process about how you could have improved your investigation; organization, measurement accuracy, mathematical manipulation,
