Myers-Briggs Type Indicator • The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is commonly used instrument to identify cognitive preferences. • Developed by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs, the MBTI, is based on Carl Jung’s psychological type theories. • Over 3 million individuals complete the MBTI each year, and corporations currently administer nearly 40% of these instruments for applied purposes such as leadership development.
MBTI Dichotomies • This instrument assesses self-perceptions concerning direction of energy, perceiving styles, and judgment styles by measuring preferences on four dichotomies: – Extroversion-Introversion (E-I) – Sensing-i. Ntuition (S-N) – Thinking-Feeling (T-F) – Judging-Perceiving (J-P)
MBTI Dichotomies relating with others Extroversion Introversion information gathering and use Sensing i. Ntuition decision-making Thinking Feeling organizing self and others Judging Perceiving
MBTI Results, Critical Thinking, and Creativity • Critical thinkers tend to be more: – Sensing (S) and Judging (J) • Creative people tend to be more: – i. Ntuitive (N) and Perceiving (P) The Extroversion-Introversion(E-I) dichotomy determines how creativity is expressed E’s tend to express through showmanship—singing, dancing I’s tend to express through art and photography • Regardless of the natural preference, the opposite style of thinking can, and should, be developed.
Critical Thinking vs. Creative Thinking 1. Critical Thinking Critical thinking is the active, persistent, and careful consideration of a belief or form of knowledge, the grounds that support it, and the conclusions that follow. 2. Creative thinking is the generation of new ideas within or across domains of knowledge, drawing upon or intentionally breaking with established symbolic rules and procedures. Creativity is enhanced by the ability to detect connections between ideas
