Why I chose Myanmar. . . • There is an increased population of Burmese people in America. • The language is interesting in its simple complexity. • It is likely to appear in my classroom. Knowledge beforehand would be helpful.
Did You Know. . . § The country formerly known as Burma is located in Asia § Burma became Myanmar in 1989, but the United States does not recognize the change § There are 11 countries who take in Burmese refugees; the United States has taken more refugees than the other 10 countries combined
Language § The spoken language is Burmese; a form of Sino-Tibetan. § The written language was invented by a minister who was sent to India to gather information on Buddhism for the king. § Burmese is monosyllabic language that uses vocal tone, context, and word order for greater word variety and better understanding of intended meaning.

Educators can also. . . § learning about the students in their specific classroom § read novels from the communities from which the ELL students come § Provide students with opportunities to develop their voice and evaluate others § ask students to rate the school in relation to social climate and how it could be improved § have open dialogue with students about life outside of the classroom and be open to new or different practices
