My Pitch By MJ Babington
Concept Topic The main idea I have come up with is how social media has effected the growing number of people/teens with depression in this day and age. I think this could be an interesting subject to touch upon as a lot of teenagers don’t understand how social media is such a bad thing were as the older generation do.
Concept What am I making? For my fmp I will be producing a radio broadcast for BBC Radio 2 of about 10 minutes which will include a song, an interview and me explaining what the interview is about. I will be basing this radio piece on the question: “why and how does social media affect depression and mental health? ” I am hopefully going to talk to someone in my radio piece who has experience with mental health issues and who can give me an insight into how they feel social media affected them. I think it is important to look into this topic as people know it plays some role in mental health but taboo the topic as soon as it is bought up as people nowadays are somewhat addicted to social media. For my second medium, I’ll be creating a column for Teen Vogue Online magazine about my experiences with depression and social media as I feel it is important to highlight not only that it does affect people’s mental health but also the personal issues it causes and be able to talk openly about them. I will also design a print version too. I will be starting off my column with a short piece of writing about how depression made me feel and hopefully people will be able to relate as that is what I’m trying to achieve. I want people to know they are not alone.
Black and white with one bit of colour to make it eye catching
This is what I’m hoping to create for my full page photo in my magazine. Hopefully with a Facebook account post and then a horrible comment to show nasty social media can be.
Target Audience My target audience is teenagers/ young adults as They seem to be the people who are more widely known to use social media. I think it is important in this day and age, especially as more and more people are being diagnosed with mental health issues, that we focus on what we can do to improve our mental health. My target audience ideally would avid users of social media and would be interested to find out more about it and how they can use it in a positive light. Teen Vogue On the You. Gov website, it states that the readers of vogue or young, left wing females who's hobbies include pottery, drawing, painting, chess and singing. They also enjoy fashion, design and cosmetics and beauty and grooming. They are usually interesting, youthful, literate, geeky, talented, sympathetic and a perfectionist. Their profession usually involves advertising, marketing, public relations, media and publishing and agriculture and also fashion and design. They are most likely to shop at upmarket stores such as Jack Wills, Hollister, Ralph Lauren and Pandora. BBC Radio 2 I listen to BBC Radio 2 and thought quite a lot of their topics and music is starting to be aimed at younger people, but on the Gov UK site they've put that it is aimed at the older generation, both genders who are right wing. Hobbies include quizzes, looking after pets and buying and selling online. They tend to be geeky, punctual, funny and dependable with a big heart. Their profession usually involves government run services such as police, social care and ambulance service. They are also involved in insurance and manufacturing. They tend to shop at places like go outdoors and Very and watch shows such as black adder.
Inspiration My idea came from my own issues with social media and depression as I personally feel it is a continuous loop. Social media makes you feel bad about yourself so you stop using it but you need it for people to make you feel better so you go back on it. It’s almost as if I can’t imagine my life without it. I thought that a lot of people must feel this way hence why I researched into it and found out that a lot of people have issues involving social media and mental health. I also listen to a lot of music and particularly a Youtuber called Prince EA who raps about controversial issues and how we can all change the world for the better and this inspires me to make a difference, even if it just to my peers.

Key Conclusions From my research, I’ve learnt that social media does affect mental health but people tend to taboo the subject because they need social media in order to feel like they belong anywhere. People also don’t want to blame social media as it means admitting to the world having some sort of addiction to it. I think my research has shown that not a lot of people have anything positive to say about it and yet we still continue to use it. A lot of people commented on how it creates an unrealistic version of reality and how this then creates unrealistic expectations regarding body image and the way you should present yourself to others. I used primary research (talking to other people about their thoughts and feelings) and secondary research (using the internet to find articles related to my topic) to come to this conclusion. I can now tell that a lot of people had negative outlooks rather than positive outlooks which means I need to try and not be bias in my work.
Personally, I think I could’ve worked to my schedule a bit more as I felt I spent longer than I thought I would on research and I didn’t take this into account. I also fell ill and didn’t take that into account. I could’ve worked during the Easter holidays which would’ve made my life a lot easier.
