What is dyslexia? • Dyslexia comes from the Greek language and means difficulty with words. • Very personal journey • There is no cure for dyslexia since it is a brain based difference. • It is a difference in the way the brain works so we must adapt • Problems learning the letter sounds of words for reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding) • Lack of accuracy and fluency when attempting to read (and decode) so read slowly and make many mistakes.
The gift of dyslexia to science? • University education • Inquiring mind and problem solving by generating innovative ideas through analytic thinking. • Creative thinking and finding different strategies to solve a problem by seeing the biggest picture as a result of insightful thinking. • Art can reward this creativity while science doesn't • We bring innovation through our experiences to solve old problems with new ideas.
