My Healthy Living animation PLANNING Purpose - to promote exercise to teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 through the creation of an animation for the charity Life and Health (see scenario on next slide). By Jamie Hunter

The Scenario & Audience • • I work at as a trainee computer animator and have been employed by the charity Life and Health to create a digital animation promoting healthy living to young people. The aspect of healthy living that I have chosen to focus on is exercising as it is important to stay healthy during teenage years when you are growing. They message that I am conveying is that there are many sports to choose from, which I will give examples of, and that there are many benefits, which I will also state. My target audience is teenagers between the aged of 12 -18 as that is when your body changes the most so it is most important to exercise. Also, people in this age range are more susceptible to under-exercising because of video games and getting too much homework. More specifically, the animation will target 12 -18 year olds, of both genders, who are at school in the UK. In order to appeal to this audience, the animation should contain plenty of content to retain interest and the colours and sound effects will make it more interesting.

Title scene: The title of the animation (‘Exercise for Life’) and who it’s by (my name) will wipe from left to right on the scene. The text will be black, font size 36 and style Elephant. The amount of time that the title slide will be on is 4 seconds (96 frames). I have chosen the background colour green – for the whole animation unless stated otherwise - as it is associated with nature and living healthily. In addition, I will insert an audio clip of a crowd of people cheering to make the introduction bolder. The song Baba O’Riley by The Who taken from www. youtube. com/watch? v=v-lay. Deaz. Y 8 will play until the end of the animation. Exercise for Life By Jamie Hunter Second scene: There will be a face that says “Exercise is important to stay healthy and here is why. . . ” (font size 26 and style Baskerville Old Face) This will be followed by a change in scene as the third scene is faded into. I will use lip sync and a speech bubble to explain this. The whole sentence will not be in the speech bubble at once enabling the lip sync to be more effective. Additionally, I will insert an audio clip, from audacity, of me speaking. This scene will last 3 seconds (72 frames) and the assets will be: 3 mouth shapes, a face and a speech bubble with text. Exercise is important to

Third scene: The third scene, which will last for about 10 seconds (240 frames), will explain how exercise is beneficial. This be shown by a changing text – font size 30 and style Baskerville Old Face - at the top of the page. At the bottom, there will be a character running back and forth. I will achieve this using the skeletal technique and will therefore need to create individual parts of the body, such as the forearm, the foot etc. The reason that I have chosen to have a running animation is to promote exercise and show simple, easy and fun it can be. The background will be an image of Central Park, NYC which is more aesthetically pleasing and would be a nice location to exercise. This scene should have a smooth transition to the next scene as it will fade into it. Here is the text that I shall use (excluding ones already shown): ‘it relieves stress’, ‘it raises self esteem’, ‘you will have more energy’ and ‘you will look and feel better. ’ Here are the assets: Head, Body and two of all the following: feet, shoulder, forearm, thigh, shin, hands. Exercise can be beneficial in the following ways: • it strengthens your heart

Forth scene: The forth scene, which will last for eight seconds, will promote different sports that you can participate in. Different sports will be shown using the motion tween as they will slide across the screen. There will also be text below the image – bold black, size 36 font and style Baskerville Old Face - to tell the audience what the sport is. This scene will last for 8 seconds (192 frames) and will include the sports: Tennis, Football, Swimming and Running (as they are popular sports amongst young people). Therefore, the assets will be the four images and texts of sports taken from Google images (see assets list document). Final scene: The final scene will consist of the images of sports, as shown in the previous scene, surrounding the smiley face from scene 2. The face will say, ‘stay healthy by exercise regularly’ to end the animation. This will include lip sync and audio. Assets: 4 sport images, face, 3 mouth shapes and speech bubble with text. This scene will last for 5 seconds (120 frames). Tennis

Alternative ideas 1. I alternatively planned for the text to appear in scene one by thought it would be more interesting and would show a different animation technique if the title was to slide across the screen. 2. Alternatively, I could have not included a speech bubble in scene two, but I thought that it would add to the visual impact of the scene. 3. I had the idea of adding in an audio clip on scene three of a person breathing heavily to match the skeletal animation of a person running. However, this proved impractical as it would be placed over the top of another audio clip, of me speaking, making it difficult to hear it. 4. I did consider listing the negatives of not exercising in scene four, although I decided to give examples of sports as this is a positive approach to encouraging exercise – which teenagers are more likely to listen to. 5. Originally, I planned to rotate the images around the smiley face in scene 5 ( the final scene), but in the end decided that this might be too challenging, with too many components at the same time (such as audio and lip-sync). Extra details: • • The animation will last for 30 seconds. The speed of the animation will be 24 frames per second. There will be 720 frames in total. The song playing throughout will be an instrumental version of ‘Baba O’Riley’ by The Who.

Changes that I have made Scene 1: This scene has remained relatively untouched compared to other scenes. It is still very similar to the original storyboard plan. There are, however, a few changes such as with the font – the title is the same size but I reduced the size of my name on the banner so that the title is the point of focus. The font is also now Times New Roman instead of Elephant as there was a limited font choice. There is also no song – I was planning on using ‘Baba O’Riley’ – starting to play as I felt that it would clash with other soundtracks later on. Scene 2: The text is no longer in a speech bubble as because that was not a shape option on Adobe Flash. Also, the font is larger at size 30 so that it stands out more. The transition between scene 3 and 4 does not fade either – this was too difficult to achieve. Scene 3: In this scene, I originally planned to have changing text at the top to fit with the voice soundtrack and a skeletal animation of a person jogging. However, this has been changed as Adobe Flash flashed up with a notice to say that it didn’t have enough memory for me to make the skeletal animation – this was annoying as I had to abandon it. Therefore, I also changed my plans for the text as it would be out of place. Instead there is now a list of the facts stated in the voice soundtrack making it easy for the audience to comprehend to message. Scene 4: The plan for scene 4 was not changed in terms of the content, but in order to be able to make the four motion tweens that I wanted, I had to make four individual scenes. The collective length of these scenes is 12 seconds (3 seconds each), which is longer than I planned for the original one scene, because the motion tweens were too quick and the text unreadable at the length of 2 seconds. Scene 5: In scene 5 there was meant to be a smiling face – to show that exercise makes you happy – and the images of sports from the previous scenes around it. There was also going to be a soundtrack of a voice saying “Stay healthy by exercising regularly. ” However, I instead opted for just a smiley face and bold text stating what the voice-over would have said. I thought the sport images would overcrowd the final scene and the changes would make a good visual end to the animation.
