Jehovah Melek • Jehovah (God) is the King • Not a personal name but title • Read Psalm 5: 2; 10: 16; 74: 12; 84: 3 • Can also be titled Lord of hosts (Jehovah Sabaoth) (See Isaiah 6: 5; 1 Sam 4: 4)
Jehovah Melek • • What are the functions of a king? govern (set laws) punish reward make war make peace represent his people
Jehovah Melek • What do you consider attritubutes of our King? • regal • powerful • wise • righteous • all-powerful • awesome
Jehovah Melek • Read Isa 6: 3 -4. Jehovah is surrounded by glory. • No man has seen the face of God (Exodus 33: 20). Why?
Jehovah Melek • Earthly rulers served three roles as king of Israel • (1) they provided legislative, judicial and executive services for the people • (2) he was their representative on earth. He took the place of God for the people. (Jesus will fulfill both roles in HIS kingdom). • Read Isa 33: 22. Jehovah was above all earthly kings
Jehovah Melek • Read 1 King 3: 16 -28. Kings often have to acts as judge. • Kings were called upon to provide services for the people (executive). • What types of services do we expect our King to provide?
Jehovah Melek • Specific terms relate to Kingship: • Reign. Read Psalm 93: 1; 97: 1; 99: 1. God decides who reigns. • Throne. Read Ps 11: 4 and Isa 66: 1. God is omnipresent, he can be everywhere equally at all times. • In opposition to Jehovah’s throne is those thrown out of heaven. Read Ps 94: 20.
Jehovah Melek • Solomon’s throne was elaborate. Read 1 Kings 10: 18 -20. • Can you imagine the majesty of Jehovah’s throne. Read Rev 4: 2 -4.
Application • Although God is also our Father (Matt 6: 9), as King He has sovereignty over our lives. • Because of this, we can approach the throne with: • assurance that he knows our situation • assured that he has the power to assist us • assured that he will judge with righteousness • assured that he is merciful
Application • While he is our Father, we need to be mindful that he is King. Read Esther 5: 2. • We need to approach the throne with: • humility • honesty • with reverence • understanding his nature • anywhere, always
Application • We need to be mindful that in worship, He is worthy (worth-ship)of our full attention. • Worship is mandated. Read John 4: 23. • This requires us to understand the nature of Jehovah. Read John 4: 24. It requires our emotion, intellect and will. • Worship must be based upon knowledge of His Word. • What do you consider as examples of the most meaningful worship you have been part of ?
Application • We need to be able to discern between true celebration of worship and earthly worship. • What are some of the parts of earthly worship (no matter how well intentioned) that might move the focus away from Jehovah? • excessive emotion; ritualistic doings; more tribute to man than God.
Application • Only the chosen get to enter the Kingdom and be in the presence of the King. Read John 3: 3 • Read Matt 5: 3 -10. God is fully in control of who enters his Kingdom and their behavior. • We need to understand that the heavely kingdom is different than the earthly millenial kingdom (people will obey; no sin or selfishness)
Application • Today the King rules us by yieldedness (Matt 7: 21 and Luke 12: 23). • We are called upon to pray for the coming kingdom (Matt 6: 9 -10).
