Element: pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance by chemical or physical means. Compound: made of two or more elements chemically bonded in a set ratio. Mixture: two or more substances that are in the same place but not chemically bonded together.
Element • Consists of only one kind of atom.
Element • Cannot be broken down into simpler matter by physical or chemical means.
Element • Can exist as either atoms or molecules. Ar Atom: smallest part of matter N 2 Molecule: two or more atoms combined
Element • A limited number of elements make up Earth, living matter, oceans and the atmosphere.
Compound • Consists of atoms of two or more different elements bonded together.
Compound • Can be broken down into elements by chemical means. Element B Element A Element B
Compound • Has properties different from its component elements Sodium: will react violently with water Table Salt: Used to season food Chlorine: a gas which is deadly if inhaled
Compound • Always contains the same ratio of its component atoms. H 2 O There are two hydrogen atoms for every one oxygen atom.
Mixture • Two or more elements and/or compounds physically in the same space but not bonded together.
Mixture • Can be separated into its components by physical means
Mixture • Often retains the properties of its components. d S a al Lettuce t ro r Ca Tomato
