My Digital Footprint By James Kim Why it
My Digital Footprint By James Kim
Why it is hard to find myself online • I am aware of my digital footprint and it’s consequences, so I keep all of my online or social media account private. • Any pictures, comments or likes I make are all made after critical thinking and choice. • My name is a very common name, and the internet filters results based on fame, or relevance. • I don’t have particular pictures with someone else who has a public account on the internet or social media. • Even if my social media accounts are found, nothing suspicious on it.
Digital Footprint affects on future opportunities • Although there is nothing obvious at fault on my digital footprint, there could be possible problems in the future. • If I have a dirty feed on my social media account, universities or jobs are likely to think twice before hiring or accepting me. • Jobs or schools can look at my digital footprint and see what kind of person I am (hobbies, interests, friends, relationships). • Anything that is online of me reveals my true personality, or what I am like outside of school, and in the public. • My digital footprint could be helpful or unhelpful for future opportunities such as jobs or schools. • If I have a very clean digital footprint with positive attributes, I am likely to have a higher chance of getting hired or accepted then someone else who doesn’t have as clean of a digital footprint. • If I don’t take good care of my digital footprint, it could potentially ruin any future opportunity I have in a negative way. (i. e. If a job is choosing between myself and someone with identical grades and hobbies, but my digital footprint is worse, I could potentially not get chosen)
How to Keep my Digital Footprint safe • Continue to have all online or social media accounts private, so it is hard for people to access my information. • Think twice before posting, and question if what I follow, friend, like, or comment is really necessary, and how others will think of it. • Consistently search myself on the internet, and look at my social media accounts from perspective of other people, and make sure it is safe and appropriate. • Be careful of what I say to others on the internet, because once I say it, there is no completely “deleting” it. • Use long, strong and memorable passwords, so no one else can go into my account. • Delete old accounts that are not used or have things I regret about (i. e. weird pictures), so it is deleted, or harder to find. • If I don’t need certain shares or posts, get rid of them, so I won’t regret them in the future.
What my Digital Footprint looks like to others • I am not afraid of showing my passions to others because I am a passionate person. If other students were to be able to see my actual profile, they would see that I follow a lot of basketball and a particular Korean girl group. I have a huge interest in basketball along with music, so I wouldn’t really mind if others see this. • If I were to tell this to others, I would explain how much I enjoy basketball and music, and help them understand exactly why I follow so many pages. • I would overall have no concern with others finding out and going through my social media account, because I have nothing too personal on there, and a positive digital footprint. • I learned that it is much easier to find someone with a public account than a private account when I searched my name online. This helped me realize that it really is important to keep one’s account private to have a safer digital footprint.
Things I learned • I learned a lot of things during the course of this assignment. I normally take good care of my digital footprint, but I hadn’t checked it in a while. This assignment gave me another chance to look back and assure there wasn’t anything worth noting. • I also learned that it really is important to keep your account private and secure, because many people don’t realize how many risks leaving your account public really is. This is because anybody can see what one has followed, what pictures are taken of them, and their friends. • I learned that I should continue to keep good care of my digital footprint, so I will have a positive and clean digital footprint for the future. This will help me have advantages over other people when it comes to opportunities, such as jobs or school.
