Set Designer In this job, I would study scripts and discuss ideas with the director, share my ideas with costume, make-up, props and lighting designers, creating designs inbudget, producing storyboards for my set ideas and overseeing set construction. For this job a Foundation or Bachelors degree is recommended, with a level 4/5 award minimum level.
Skills needed… I have many of the skills needed to be a set designer such as creative thinking, designing, teamwork, initiative and presentation. I also have many qualities, interests and work preferences that would help me in this job such as motivation, eye for detail , a fun environment, drawing and travel.
Salary and Hours Starting salaries are around 17, 000 a year but with experience this can rise to about 31, 000 a year. Set Designers who work free-lance can earn much more, usually about 1000 to 6500 per production. Earnings tend to be higher in film and TV than theatre. Typical weekly hours are 41 per week and working hours can be long and normally involve evening and weekend work.
