MUSIC VIDEO REFLECTION QUESTIONS CREATED BY SADIE KOPELMAN AICE MEDIA STUDIES
QUESTION #1: HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE OR CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS AND HOW DOES IT REPRESENT SOCIAL GROUPS OR ISSUES? • 1 a) The genre of my music video can be categorized under the title “Philosophical” due to the present moral of self-love and freedom, which is a common issue discussed under the purpose of life and the mentality of individuals in everyday society. Going along with the genre of “Philosophical”, my music video portrays these ideas very clearly, with a plethora of emotional transitions and the exhibition of life-changing decisions as do many music videos of the same genre. • However, my music video does not focus on large scale life-changing decisions that many music videos do; instead, my music video focuses on small, life-changing decisions that are made on a daily basis, that may seem incredibly freeing for an ordinary person, which is most of the public. Therefore, most of the public can then relate to my music video.
QUESTION #1: HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE OR CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS AND HOW DOES IT REPRESENT SOCIAL GROUPS OR ISSUES? • 1 b) The moral of my music video is self-love and freedom; more specifically loving yourself enough to walk away from anything that does not benefit you and freeing your time and mind to be able to enjoy life while it is still in front of you. Today, many young and old individuals feel as though they are trapped in certain situations, whether they be stuck in a friend group in which they do not feel comfortable, or – in this example- being stuck in an office where precious seconds of life are being wasted every time that their boss yells at them. Every day, people are halted at a cross-road because they do not know whether to love themselves enough to stand up and walk away, or to remain glued to the floor. It is ultimately that person’s own decision and in my music video, one specific individual decided to throw papers at her boss and go see the world.
QUESTION #2: HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT ENGAGE WITH AUDIENCES AND HOW WOULD IT BE DISTRIBUTED AS A REAL MEDIA TEXT? • 2 a) The one thing in my music video that really grabs the viewer’s attention is the ability to make simplicity show all that it needs to portray about the story of the music video. Sometimes, music videos can have too much going on at once, steering the attention away from the moral, but rather towards keeping up with everything popping up on the computer screen. My music video is simple, yet elegant. What makes the video different, similarly, is the appeal to emotion that everyone faces (anger, freedom, contentment, excitement, boredom, etc. ) Many music videos also have a main premise to love another, but my music video focuses on freeing and loving yourself enough to walk away from anything that is not beneficial or humane to the spirit.
QUESTION #2: HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT ENGAGE WITH AUDIENCES AND HOW WOULD IT BE DISTRIBUTED AS A REAL MEDIA TEXT? • 2 b) In order to make my music video accessible to the public, I would first start by putting it on a popular web video browser-such as You. Tube- so that it can be displayed to everyone of the public. This way, I would be able to analyze the popularity of the factors that make up the video, as well as the video in its entirety. If it becomes popular enough to move to a higher level, such as at a music convention, I would then contact a video production company to see if the video can be modified in any way to further please the public, . • Advertising would consist of short, fifteen-second previews before viewers watch another video on sites such as You. Tube, Hulu, Spotify, etc. The more places, the better. Eventually, I would preview the music video as a commercial on television programs. If the popularity level shoots through the roof, mentioning the video on celebrity news channelssuch as E! News- would be the icing on the cake.
QUESTION 3: HOW DID YOUR PRODUCTION SKILLS DEVELOP THROUGHOUT THIS PROJECT? • 3) As a filmmaker, I have grown tremendously during the making of this music video. Working with a smaller amount of actors to make a story come to life was not easy, but taught me how to use my resources to their fullest capabilities. I learned that in order to really portray the suggested mood, action moving with the music at the right time is everything. For example, in order to portray a transition in the mood from boredom to excitement, I filmed the subject dancing in the street, right when the main chorus of the music started.
QUESTION #4: HOW DID YOU INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGIES – SOFTWARE, HARDWARE, AND ONLINE – IN THIS PROJECT? • 4) As you may be well aware of, this music video could never have been one without the incorporation of technology. Throughout the production, the main elements of technology used were: • Camera / Tri-pod • Lighting • Video Computer Software ( You. Tube, i. Tunes, editing program) • The camera and tri-pod are pretty self-explanatory, but I only took the camera off of the tri-pod once to create a point of view shot. The lighting was changed to portray variations in time and place; for example the difference between and office and a bedroom in the morning with the blinds closed.
