I thought we would start this week’s lesson with another look at the George Formby clip – “Our Sergeant Major”. It was actually from a film which George starred in called “It’s in the air”. The first link is the version we saw before, when the Sergeant Major walks in and finds that George is taking the micky out of him. The second link comes from a bit later in the film. The Sergeant Major has reported George to his superiors for being insubordinate. But when he is asked to sing the song again, he changes the words to make them say all nice things……. . Remember that when these songs and films were made they were very hard times and people needed cheering up. George Formby certainly did that and was very popular. Let’s have another look at the “C Jam Blues” Hopefully you have had a chance to practice on your instruments. Remember – the music is different for different instruments so Make sure you are using the correct version, otherwise it will sound terrible! The music is at the end of this presentation.
Start by listening to the clip below again https: //youtu. be/m. DVca-uwi. F 8 You will hear the main theme (the head) straight away played on the piano. It is then repeated by the brass section. After that, there is a lot of what is called “Improvisation” by different sections of the band. Improvisation is when a musician makes up the tune on the spot This is what we are going to practice today. Go to the next slide for the instructions…. .
But first, use the backing track below to practice the head, using your music. (You might be able to get somebody to print your music off for you) If you find the first one too fast, try the second link https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=LAOAC 2 a. Now let’s see how we could improvise ourselves. To start with we are only going to use 5 notes For a flute, recorder, violin, guitar, cello – the 5 notes are For Trumpets The five notes are: D E F# A B
Here is theme. If you play a Flute, Recorder, violin, cello, etc. then this is the music for you. If you play a Bb instrument like a clarinet or trumpet, You should look at next slide
