Music and Emotions: Songs About Fatherhood
“Perfect” By Simple Plan Hey dad look at me Think back and talk to me Did I grow up according to plan? And do you think I'm wasting my time doing things I wanna do? But it hurts when you disapprove all along And now I try hard to make it I just want to make you proud I'm never gonna be good enough for you I can't pretend that I'm alright And you can't change me 'Cuz we lost it all / Nothing lasts forever I'm sorry / I can't be perfect Now it's just too late and We can't go back I'm sorry / I can't be perfect
I try not to think / About the pain I feel inside Did you know you used to be my hero? All the days you spent with me / Now seem so far away And it feels like you don't care anymore And now I try hard to make it / I just want to make you proud I'm never gonna be good enough for you I can't stand another fight / And nothing's alright 'Cuz we lost it all / Nothing lasts forever I'm sorry / I can't be perfect Now it's just too late and / We can't go back I'm sorry / I can't be perfect
Nothing's gonna change things that you said Nothing's gonna make this right again Please don't turn your back I can't believe it's hard Just to talk to you But you don't understand 'Cuz we lost it all Nothing lasts forever I'm sorry I can't be perfect Now it's just too late and We can't go back I'm sorry / I can't be perfect 'Cuz we lost it all Nothing lasts forever I'm sorry / I can't be perfect Now it's just too late and We can't go back I'm sorry / I can't be perfect
“A Father’s Love By Bob Carlisle Three feet tall and full of questions You must have thought I was the smartest man alive I didn't always have the answers To every little how and where and why Like, Daddy, why's the sky so blue today? Does Jesus really hear me when I pray? When I grow up, will I be just like you? Will I be tall and strong and brave? There is no power on earth like your fathers' love So big and so strong as your father's love A promise that's sacred, a promise from heaven above No matter where you go. . . always know You can depend on your father's love
Especially when it's cold, especially when you're lonely When your little heart is lost trying to find it's way I know the world is always changing But, remember son, that some things never change And even when my life on earth is through There will still be a part of me in you 'Cause some things are forever Nothing's ever gonna take my love from you There is no power on earth like your father's love So big and so strong as your father's love A promise that's sacred, a promise from heaven above Did I hug enough, did I care enough When you most needed me, Was I there enough Enough to make you feel the power of Your father's love
1. What do you believe the songs are about? Both songs deal with relationships between fathers and their sons. “Perfect, ” by Simple Plan, is told from the perspective of a son who has failed to measure up to the expectations of his father. “A Father’s Love, ” meanwhile, is a message confirming the special bond that exists between father and son.
2. How do the songs relate to childhood, adolescence, or the human lifespan? The two songs go up and down the human lifespan, presenting a path that most people will follow. We all are born to parents, who inter-react with us, in varying ways, throughout our lives. And many of us will also become parents, thus moving us to the other end of the perspective spectrum.
3. What feelings, problems, conflicts, etc. are being conveyed in the songs? One is of pessimism, one of optimism. One of distance, one of connection. One about failed chances, the other about pervasive trust.
4. How did the songs “speak” to you personally? How could you relate to them (or not)? Use a real-life example or explanation to support your answer. As both a son and a father, these songs both speak to me in deep, meaningful ways. In one respect, I have a father whom I love and admire. He allowed me to become my own person and I know he is proud of me. At the same time, I have two boys who I love without limits, and I can only hope they never have to feel they couldn’t measure up to my expectations.
