Capturing motion Photography proved it could capture permanent images more precisely than an artist’s hands. Yet, as soon as the early scientists discovered this image making process, others began to experiment with the abilities of the camera to capture a precise moment. Early motion images showed pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages frozen in unusual postures. The mechanics of the camera would further evolve to capture what the eye could not see.

Landscape as document and thing of beauty Landscape photography began as a document, with early photographers wanting to show their audiences what a place looked like. While the camera verifies aspects of reality, it can also express the artistry of the person holding the camera. Oftentimes a landscape picture becomes a thing of beauty, particularly if the hotographer is sensitive to the conventions of landscape painting. Through the use of light, composition, timed exposures, and development, we see not only the details of a particular place, but how it felt for the photographer to be there.

Nature’s design Photographs of scientific specimens, which revealed surface structures of animal and nature forms, were able to significantly impact a number of photographers. Distinguished by a neutral presentation and emphasis on discovering structure, these images share some of the characteristics associated with scientific inquiry.

The photography on in the museum is quite nice and is mostly appealing to the eye. I chose this museum because I like photography. I think this was actually a little enjoyable to see all of the images of stuff in the museum on this website. This experience made me think about the way I should take pictures to make them look nicer because I take a lot of pictures. After this online experience, I would like to visit the museum in real life sometime in the future.
